D128 Board of Education Appoints Jean Sophie as New Board Member
At its June 22, 2026, meeting, the Community High School District 128 Board of Education unanimously appointed Jean Sophie, Ed.D., to fill a vacant seat on the Board, which expires in April 2027. She was selected from a pool of nine applicants.
A longtime educator and school leader, Dr. Sophie served as superintendent of Lake Bluff Elementary School District 65 from 2012 to 2020. In 2019, she was named the Lake County Superintendent of Distinction. Following her retirement, she continued to support school districts as an educational consultant. Her children attended District 128 schools.
“The D128 Board of Education welcomes Dr. Jean Sophie and looks forward to the expertise she will bring to our work in supporting our D128 students, staff, and community. She comes in with years of educational experience within the local schools ecosystem, and we look forward to her meaningful contributions to this D128 board position,” said Board President Mithilesh Kotwal.
“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve District 128,” Sophie said. “Throughout my career as an educator–including experience in both traditional and alternative high school settings – I have seen the transformative impact that strong schools can have on students' lives. I look forward to working with my fellow board members to support equitable access to rigorous and meaningful learning opportunities for all students, while ensuring that the district remains a responsible steward of taxpayer resources. D128 has a long tradition of excellence, and I am excited to help build on that foundation.”

Celebrate the Back-to-Back State Champion LHS Baseball Team at Libertyville Days
The community is invited to join in celebrating one of the most remarkable accomplishments in Illinois high school baseball history. On Saturday, June 12, the LHS Wildcats Baseball Team captured its second consecutive IHSA State Championship, becoming just the fourth school in Illinois history to repeat as baseball state champions.
To recognize this achievement, the Libertyville Civic Center Foundation, organizers of the annual Libertyville Days Festival, has invited our team to be honored during Saturday's festivities on Saturday, June 20. The team will ride through downtown Libertyville as part of the Libertyville Days Parade that begins at 10:00 a.m. Following the parade, players and coaches will return to Cook Park, where community members will have the opportunity to:
⚾ View the State Championship Trophy
⚾ Meet the players and coaches
⚾ Take photos
⚾ Collect autographs
Celebrate this historic accomplishment with fellow Wildcats and community members!

Students in D128 Summer Academies are practicing academic skills and building their independence and confidence through hands-on learning experiences at school and in the community. Recently, students from LHS and VHHS put their skills into practice by planning meals, shopping for groceries, and preparing food—developing important math, writing, organizational, communication, and problem-solving life skills in real-world situations that foster increased academic and post-secondary transition readiness.

This week, students in Jennifer Kahn's Field and Restoration Ecology class met Restoration Ecologist Kayla from RES Taylor Creek. Kayla told students about her journey in college and in her early career. She shared that her favorite parts of her job are conducting prescribed burns on restored prairie and getting to work outside all day.
In addition to speaking with students, Kayla delivered over 4,500 plants to LHS for the native plant sale and for restoration projects on the LHS campus. Thank you, Kayla!

Students Strengthen Language Skills While Exploring Future Pathways
Students in Adventures in English, D128's Summer School English Learner program, strengthened their language skills through real-world experiences across the community this week. Students toured College of Lake County (CLC) and learned about college opportunities from staff, enjoyed lunch at Maciano’s while talking with owner Jay Rosati about entrepreneurship and business ownership, and met with leaders from LMT Omsrud, a local advanced manufacturing company, to learn about careers and apprenticeship pathways. These authentic learning experiences helped students build confidence in their English skills while exploring future educational and career opportunities.
