Today we celebrate Virginia Intern Day! πŸŽ‰πŸ‘·

This summer, 86 (and counting) VMI cadets stepped into internships across a wide range of fields, gaining firsthand experience, expanding their professional networks, and putting their leadership and problem-solving skills into practice. 35 of these cadets received our Rising Talent Internship Grant to support their participation, funded by SCHEV, including Cadet Persons (pictured top right).

Virginia Intern Day is an opportunity to recognize the students, employers, and institutions that make these experiences possible. We are proud of the cadets who represented VMI in workplaces throughout the Commonwealth and beyond, and grateful to the organizations that supported their growth.

Experiential learning remains a vital part of career development, helping cadets explore career paths and prepare for success after graduation.

A great day representing VMI at Virginia Intern Day, hosted by James Madison University (Harrisonburg, VA).

Cadet Timothy Persons '27, a Computer Engineering major interning with Everbrite LLC in Buena Vista, joined me for a program focused on career planning, professional networking, and the value of internships. We heard from a panel of industry experts, connected with students and employers from the Shenandoah Valley, and celebrated the continued growth of internship opportunities in the region.

As expected, Cadet Persons represented VMI exceptionally throughout the event, engaging with fellow interns and employers and building connections through shared interests.

Events like this highlight the crucial opportunities internships provide to develop professional skills, expand networks, and explore career paths.

One more internship spotlights from ECS Group of Companies (Engineering Consulting Services). This summer they are hosting 5 VMI cadets as interns across Virginia & the Carolinas.

Sadler Boykin '28 - Civil Engineering - Geotechnical Intern - Returning Intern (Construction Materials Intern Summer 2025)

"I found ECS through the jobs and career fair that was hosted at VMI. I was able to get in contact with Mr. Lincoln Swineford and got an internship for the summer and I have been excited to return for a second year. ECS aligns greatly with my future aspirations as I am studying Civil Engineering at VMI and would like to continue with ECS after graduation. Currently, I am working on Soil Boring and classification. This entails collecting soil samples from a drill and classifying what types of soil and the depth it sits at. This is important for a job site as construction companies need to know what they are building on and how the ground will support the load of the building they plan on constructing. I greatly recommend the career service fairs held at VMI for any cadets looking for job opportunities as this is a great place to branch out and gain connections for future endeavors. "
