πŸ§€ Real Men Read Recap! πŸ§€

We had a very special guest reader join us for our weekly program- Dr. Bill Bradford, Interim Superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools!

Dr. Bradford sat down with our students to read The Big Cheese, a fantastic story about true sportsmanship, participation, and having fun, which are way more important than always being number one.

We are so honored to have had Dr. Bradford share his time and love of reading with our scholars today. Thank you for making this week’s session extra memorable! πŸ“šβœ¨

πŸ“• Books, Heroes & Fire Trucks! πŸ“•

Our scholars had an absolutely incredible week at Real Men Read with two very special guests! Huge thanks to Mr. Mike, from our cafeteria team, and the brave firefighters from the Lexington Fire Department for spending time reading with our scholars! πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’

🧯This week’s books focused on community helpers and fire safety.

πŸš’Our scholars didn't just read about real-life heroes - they got to meet them in person AND climb right inside the fire truck!

Moments like this show our scholars that reading connects us to our community and opens doors to big adventures!πŸšͺ🌟

β™ οΈπŸƒCards, Collaboration & Multiplication!

✏️Today, our 3rd graders practiced building equal groups through an interactive card game.
βœ–οΈLearning multiplication is so much easier (and way more fun) when you can visualize the math!

We are so proud of their teamwork today! πŸ‘πŸ½βœ¨

🌽 Learning Came to Life with Corn-A-Palooza! 🌽

Our 5th graders recently wrapped up their first ELA Benchmark unit, and they culminated the unit with a fun-filled, hands-on Corn-A-Palooza day!

Throughout this unit, our scholars dove deep into informational texts to explore how natural resources are cultivated and how corn is structured. They put their reading skills to work by:

πŸ”‘Identifying key details and central ideas, explaining complex relationships within texts, and analyzing the author’s point of view

To bring the informational text and skills to life, students got hands-on and crossed the curriculum into science.

🀝🏼 A special thank you to Jessica Schroeder, with our community partner Seedleaf, for leading a plant germination activity and serving up delicious Mexican street corn!
🌽 Scholars tested traditional techniques by grinding corn using real stones and crafting corn husk dolls.
🍞Everyone rounded out the celebration by sampling freshly baked cornbread!

We are so proud of our 5th graders' critical thinking, curiosity, and hard work! Drop a 🌽 in the comments to celebrate them!

πŸ“šSip, Sip, Hooray for Summer Reading! πŸ“š

Our incredible GWC scholars crushed their summer reading goals, and we couldn't be prouder! To celebrate, we threw a fancy drink party complete with fun, colorful drinks, and big smiles.

✨ The best part? Every single scholar in attendance read over 20 books this summer!

Way to go, scholars! Keep turning those pages and reaching for the stars! πŸŒŸπŸ‘πŸΎ
