What happens when being a veterinarian starts feeling like the measure of your worth as a human being?
A new study of 201 practicing veterinarians examined self-dehumanization - feeling mechanical, believing your value is tied only to your performance, or losing touch with who you are outside the clinic. Higher self-dehumanization was linked to more burnout, secondary traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. The depression connection held even after burnout was accounted for.
Well-being can't just mean teaching people to cope with unhealthy expectations. Veterinary workplaces also need to protect rest, autonomy, emotional expression, and identities outside the profession.
Being professional should never require becoming less human.
