Pollination Power Game!
Grades K-2 Science/Math/Phys Ed/Music

Background knowledge:
We're learning that flowers need pollinators, like bees 🐝, to carry pollen from one flower to the same kind of flower. (Because flowers can't use pollen from a different plant.) Each piece of pollen contains half of the set of instructions to make a seed. The other half is found inside the flower's 🌼 egg. The pollinator takes the second half of the instructions to the flower when looking for nectar. Once the bee 🐝 lands on the flower, the carried pollen sticks to the stigma, opens up, then travels down to the egg to grow a seed.

Activity:

Materials:
🟨 15-20 sets of matching megablocks (each set must be different colors and sizes)
🟨 (Optional) Play "Flight of the Bumblebee" in the background during the game
🟨 (Optional) Seeds, dirt, pots, water for afterwards

Prep:
⬛️ Separate all of the paired blocks
⬛️ Place one half of the pairs in one large area (living room, playroom, large rug, etc.) This will be the main flower field with all of the "types" of flowers.
⬛️ Place the remaining blocks (the matches) in other places/rooms (kitchen, hallway, etc.) These blocks represent the other flowers in different yards.

Instructions:
🌼 Say: "You are pretending to be busy bees! Bees collect pollen to help make more flowers grow! But they can only go to one type of flower at a time!"
🌼 Show the main flower field where all of the "type of flowers" are growing.
🌼 Say: "Look at all of the species of beautiful flowers! See how each one is different? Can you tell me how they differ? (Student responses) You are going to buzz over to a flower (block), gather pollen (pick it up), then fly to find its match in another section of "yard" (room). When you find the same flower block, connect them together to make a seed! Then, bring your seed over to me!"
🌼 Demonstrate
🌼 Say: "Remember that, just like real bees, you can only carry one type of pollen at a time, so you can only pick up one block at a time. One block for each trip. After you find a match and make the seed, remember to give me the seed, then fly off to pollinate another flower!"
🌼 Students begin the game. You can level up the difficulty by providing blocks that have no matches. You can also have different sizes of brick blocks (mega, duplo, lego).
🌼 Once the blocks have been collected (self-cleaning game!), you can plant real flowering seeds. You can also provide a healthy snack or drink to represent nectar - the bee's payment for pollinating.
