On Our Study of School Boundaries

A word that I've used since the second year of my career to guide my work is the word PURPOSEFUL. I selected it because I knew that when I was purposeful in my classroom, I would focus on the most important things that would help my students. In other words, when I knew what I needed to do to help my students succeed, I did the best work by being intentional.

In our discussions with our constituents, we know that school size is a major factor for our community. This is why we are doing a deep dive study of the boundaries in Aspen Peaks. We began this conversation at the start of the year and it got started in earnest in July by inviting school administrators to give their thoughts on any changes. We have discussed the capacity of the buildings, what programs the schools house, when past boundary studies have occurred, and even the traffic and flow around school have all been discussed.

As we studied more deeply, we realized that we need to be purposeful in this process, so that any changes are intentional, targeted, and helpful to the schools’ communities. We now have a digital form that will allow your community to submit ideas and concerns that you hope to be addressed. This can include boundaries, class sizes, specific community needs, and other relevant details. Our purpose is to make sure that we know the specific needs of individual neighborhoods.

We don’t want to stop there, either. Our hope is to go to the communities where the needs are greatest to find out even more from them about the specific needs that district leaders may not be aware of. This is so that any changes are purposeful and intentional. I’ll be sharing updates as they arise, so please keep an eye so that your voices can be heard.

We have a board meeting tomorrow. We'll start off with a study session and then move into our board meeting. As we are gearing up for next year, attending these meetings and voicing your opinions is what we hope our community will do! We want to hear your ideas, your concerns, your experiences, so that we can really attend to the needs of our community.

As we have completed the final week of school for our students I want to express my appreciation for our teachers, aides, custodians, lunch workers, principals, secretaries, bus drivers, and so many others who help our schools run. I'm grateful for our community who trusts us to be partners in the education of their children!

Our past board meeting (May 14th), the board passed four policies. The policies we are so excited for are 4752, 4253, and 4415. These are the early retirement benefits that we've had so many requests for. We are so happy to continue these benefits. Additionally, we've built them so that those who are in our sister districts for a couple of years and then join us can still be eligible!

I was unable to attend any graduations in person this year, but I was able to catch a few of them on YouTube. I was impressed by the resilience that the students at Polaris showed in their ceremony. Additionally, I got to watch Lehi High School's graduation. It was gratifying to see the enthusiasm of the coming generation!

These past two weeks have been busy! We visited the our transportation center and learned about how the buses are scheduled, maintained, and kept up. There are a lot of individuals we can thank for helping our students to get to where they need to be! I'm so grateful for them.

We have also finished our Gratitude and Listening Tour this past Thursday. It was great to hear so many ideas! And don't worry, we will have more opportunities for the community to share their ideas.

I was also blessed to attend the Hope of America in Provo. This was my first time going, though I've had siblings who have done it in the past. The best part is that I was able to attend and watch my daughter perform! Additionally, we also got to see the students from River Rock Elementary shine as they performed on the floor. It does remind me that I'm thankful for our country and the civic ideals we have. We may not always live up to the promises made, but I'd rather be striving yet imperfect, than to have no ideals to strive for at all.

The past couple of weeks have been built around a word, community. A lot of my school board work has been in this area.

I was able to attend the Lehi City Civic center openhouse. It was wonderful to see this community resource! My kids have enjoyed going to the new library. I'm grateful for the invitation and look forward to working with our municipalities to best serve our community.

I was also blessed with the opportunity to meet with various employees of Alpine School District that are not in teaching roles, but still key functions, such as secretaries, nutrition workers, custodians, registrars, and others. We met at Willowcreek Middle School and heard their insightful ideas. As we move forward, I am very interested in making sure that we don't just say that we support these employees, but actually show it in policy and action.

We've also been doing our Gratitude and Listening Tour. We had a couple over the last few weeks and have one more tonight (please come if you haven't already!) where parents, students, and future employees can share their ideas as we build the Aspen Peaks School District!

I also serve as the APSD member on the USBA Board of Directors. We had a retreat to work on our collaborative work. The mission of USBA is to "build better boards" in that all school boards get their own form of professional learning. This is a wonderful thing for us as a new school board to get up to speed!

Over the past couple of weeks I've been busy with several things dealing with our schools.

The first is a more personal event, as my daughter and her school BOB (Battle of the Books) team made it to the district competition and did really well for a their first time! I'm proud of the work they put in. Additionally I'm also thankful for those in the Alpine School District that put it together.

I was also blessed with the chance to volunteer in my kids classes as I was on my spring break (it almost always ends up being a week earlier). I enjoyed seeing the teachers and doing activities with the students!

I've also had the opportunity to participate in our school visits last week. We visited American Fork High School, American Fork Junior, and Willowcreek. It was great to hear from those principals about their community's needs and to visit classrooms and see the great work going on.

I also got to round out my week by attending the Lehi Elementary 'Good Humans' celebration. It was heartwarming to hear the teacher, staff, and administrator comments on what made those students good humans. What was especially gratifying was seeing that these were students who may not be the top of their class, but are still doing wonderful things!

Great things are happening in our schools!
