Confidence Where Fear Used to Be

Raphael's father is honest about his son's starting point. "He's definitely kind of on the fearful side, anxious side to begin with." Fearful of new things, fearful of heights, fearful even of using force in a controlled and appropriate way.

A structured training environment answers fear with evidence. A student attempts something uncomfortable, comes through it, and repeats it until the discomfort loses its grip. Confidence built that way is earned, so it holds.

For Raphael it spread well past the dojang. His father has watched it show up in speaking up and public speaking, in swimming, in talking with people he does not know. "It's also given him confidence," he says. "And it's very rewarding for him."

As the date draws near, I’m excited to announce that I am an official member of the Men’s US Sport Jujitsu Team. I’ll be competing in Guatemala at the World Championships this month. Beyond excited to represent the US at this event.
