Rooted and Free Nature School Rooted in nature. Free to learn. At Rooted and Free Nature School, we foster a caring and positive atmosphere in which children can learn.

As we bridge the gap from home to school, we offer opportunities for children to connect with nature while developing the needs of the whole child. Through exploration and hands-on activities that are both child-centered and teacher-directed, we introduce social, emotional and physical skills as well as language and math competencies. Theme- related activities emphasize the process rather than the

product and foster a sense of accomplishment. Based on the belief that children learn through play, classroom routines encourage active involvement, meaningful experimentation, and reinforcement through repetition. Schedules are designed to balance structure and free choice as well as active and quiet times. We recognize that children advance through developmental stages and we treat each student as an individual who works through each stage at their own pace. Through the love of learning, we allow children to experience their own stage of development and help them to feel success without pressure. We value the involvement and support of our families in the program. The connections that we make with each family member are important links in creating shared experiences which ultimately foster the development of our school community. By respecting the individuality of the students and their families and by celebrating diversity, we develop a nurturing community which thrives on its successes and contributes to the development of the whole child.

Way to go Camp Kirchenwald! We are so thankful to use your site during the school year knowing you set the bar so high!! We hope you have a strong finish to your summer - can’t wait to be back at camp soon!

Yesterday Kirchenwald had its American Camp Association accreditation visit. With over 250 standards of best practices for safety, facilities, environmental care, transportation, camper growth, and beyond- we once again passed with a perfect score. We take the work here at camp with a joyful sincerity and are grateful for the campers and camper families who put their trust in our program!

Happy Summer Solstice!! Let us know in the comments how you’ve been enjoying nature. We’d love to hear from you! Our intern from this past year, Mr. Nate, enjoyed a backpacking trip with friends. Mr. Nate (our intern’s dad and co-founder) is a federally licensed ba**er - he and Ms. Christie banded American Kestrels as part of a local research and conservation effort. Our K-2 class enjoyed a wet and wild final day of school on Thursday! We spent time catching animals in the stream, played animal tag and explored in the field, and took a new trail to find the tall bridge. The rain picked up in the second half of the morning, which meant we found lots of puddles to splash in, too! Our class photo is a throwback to a sunnier day, since we forgot to get one during all the fun yesterday. What a great way to finish our school year together!

Tuesday/Thursday Nature Preschool finished up their last day together at camp this morning. It was a day full of rain, mud, and time well spent with our friends. We enjoyed time at the pavilion before heading to village 2 for our snack. Then we trekked to the playspace and stream one last time before cleaning up our toys and saying bye to the camp for the end of our school year. Our friends were all a joy to spend time with this year and all grew in different ways! 🤍🤍
