In remembrance of a remarkable, talented woman who left a legacy of literacy outreach, we’re creating butterfly bookmarks with quotes from her songbook.

She said in an interview with Kentucky’s WKYT, “Well, my dad was a great guy, but my dad didn’t get a chance to go to school, and he couldn’t read or write, and that was always something sort of troubling to him. I just always wanted to do something good for my dad because he was always doing something great for us, so I got the idea to start this Imagination Library program, and just kind of in our hometown, and I thought maybe it might go a couple of counties over.”

We love you, Dolly. And all the children who receive books in the mail each month will always remember you as “the book lady.”

For a fleeting moment, we thought we had a secret admirer.

No secret, however, Scott’s House of Flowers must think we’re wonderful because they sent us a BEAUTIFUL bouquet of flowers.

Good thing it’s reciprocal. We think Scott’s House of Flowers is wonderful as well. Thank you for thinking of us and wishing us a great school year. So far, so good.

For some of us, as we began to consider what to do after high school, we didn’t know what opportunities existed or how to get to what we may have wanted. Becoming a nurse or teacher or accountant or army officer seemed to be a straightforward path. However, many other options existed, right?

To overcome the “not knowing” what careers students may consider, our STEM mother-daughter team--Mrs. Wyatt and Mrs. Rooney--invited Mrs. Wyatt’s neighbor, retired USAF COL Gary Brewer, to speak the Intro to Aviation Careers class along with her and along with their aviation classes.

COL Brewer navigated the students through his career path, from deciding to attend the Air Force Academy--transitioning from a small high school then becoming a pilot in the US Air Force, transitioning to the Air National Guard, retiring from military service, and becoming an international American Airlines pilot.

“So cool,” one student remarked about his time in command of the 161st Air Refueling Wing. So they talked about the jobs involved other than piloting the planes--like aircraft fueler, pilot instructor, avionics technician, A&P mechanic, air traffic controller, aircraft dispatcher, and aerospace engineer aka ROCKET SCIENTIST.

COL Brewer encouraged students to explore opportunities, talk to people, ask questions, and as Mrs. Rooney always says, “Take action.”

Thank you, Mrs. Wyatt, for bringing your neighbor to our LRC neighborhood. And, thank you to COL Wyatt for his military service and for taking time from flying around the world to talk with us.

Another LPS-Grows-Their-Own-Teachers success story for you.

Our own Ozias Diaz aka Ozzy (to us) aka Mr. Diaz (to his students) is student teaching--starting today--with LHS’s Mrs. Belter who also teaches American Indian Studies here at the LRC.

Ozzy started taking LPS-CU Concurrent courses with us, and continued his journey toward certification in U.S. History/Oklahoma History/Government/Economics.

I asked Ozzy how concurrent classes contributed to his success. “Of course it was great to have completed hours toward my degree, but, most importantly, I gained confidence and knew what the expectations would be when I enrolled full-time at Cameron.”
Wow. We did our job--that has been one of our goals since we established the LRC 5+ years ago.

Principals, he’ll be ready for his own classroom in Spring 2027.

So proud of you, Ozzy/Mr. Diaz!

Okay--so much happening, we can’t do a bunch of small posts. Consequently, we will do a Fri-Yay Photo Drop! Full of name drops, fun, and frolics of various sorts.

LPS-CU concurrent classes started, and WHEW. Busy with books, Blackboard, and boatloads of other issues.

Mr. Perez and Mr. Smith each gifted the library with a puzzle. And the students are already puzzling.

All three high school orchestras practiced together. Wow. Now based in the LRC.

Mrs. Howard is starting her clinical orientation to further her nursing licensure. She is excited to wear her white coat. Better keep a Tide Stain Stick in the pocket.

Sports medicine students practiced applying ACE wraps and splints. No actual wounds or breaks. Just pretending.

Professor Childs made a phone call. (The phone is not connected. Who was he talking to?)

With your first checkout of a recreational reading book, get a hippy bag.

And, just a few moments ago, Mr. Lewis baked cookies and delivered them to us warm and gooey. We love him and our work at the LRC.

Just a few of the ways our new foreign language teacher Brenda Macias, can say “I love the LRC.” A true polyglot, Ms. Macias hails from Los Angeles, but she and her daughter settled in Lawton after a stint in the military.

She credits her curiosity and travels for her language proficiency.

A math education major, she subbed for LPS last year and is now in a classroom of her own.

Today, Mr. Billings received his Oklahoma Chapter of the Air & Space Forces Association STEM Teacher of the Year windbreaker.

We’re fairly certain it possesses magical protection against wind and aliens, especially if he has the hood up--no tin foil required.

Here’s something cool:

Our amazing library assistant, Mrs. Billings, started her personal college journey summer 2026 at Cameron University.

For the past four+ years, she’s been a resource for our LPS-CU concurrent students. She helps them with everything: admission, enrollment, books & book codes, supplies, and tech woes. She encourages, listens to all issues, proofreads papers, and anything else they may need. She tolerates the regulars who sit around her desk. She eats lunch with them and reminds them that “everything will be okay.”

And, now, she’s going through the experience herself. How’d she do in her first two classes this summer? She did perfectly.

Don’t you think studying and working through her classes will make her an even more valuable resource for our students? I do.

On a personal note, I am so proud of her for undertaking this adventure.

We love life’s adventures over here in the LRC Library Learning Commons. Challenges are opportunities. We’re already good. How do we get better? Why? Because it’s fun and feels good.

Our cool, funny, smart aviation and engineering teacher, Mrs. Rooney, took her first solo flight last Sunday. Wow, right?

When asked why she wanted to fly a piece metal with some wings, a motor, and a seat that needs a pillow for her to reach the pedals, she answered, “I saw a window of opportunity and asked myself ‘why not?’”

She told us that she has always loved a plane ride. She was going somewhere fun.

But, she told us her journey learning to fly wasn’t just for herself, it was also for her students. “Even if they don’t become professional pilots, I need them to understand the power that comes with decisive action. This is just the beginning. The sky is not the limit. I don’t know mine yet, and I’m so, so grateful for that.”

Thank you, Mrs. Rooney, for inspiring your students—and all of us—to keep reaching.
