A teen walks in a little unsure, a little guarded.
Not expecting much. Just going through the motions.

Years ago, our CEO was sitting in church when her pastor shared a message that would change the way she viewed impact:

"When we think about the big things, it distracts us from the little things. If we can’t do the big thing, then do the little thing toward the big thing."

In that moment, something clicked.

It brought clarity to a calling God had placed on her heart years earlier—something she had felt deeply but hadn’t yet acted on. Like many of us, she believed that making a difference had to be something big, bold, and extraordinary.

But real impact often begins with the little things.

Sometimes it looks like a child getting to choose their own outfit.

A new pair of underwear and toiletries that belong only to them.

Packing their belongings in a duffel bag instead of a trash bag.

Someone taking the time to ask, “What do you like?”—and genuinely listening to the answer.

These may seem like small things.

But for a child entering foster care, those small moments can mean everything.

They're what lead to the smile in the mirror.
The confidence to walk into a new situation.
The sense of dignity, worth, and belonging.

That's why we continue showing up every day, doing the little things that make a big difference.

At Because One Matters, we are working hard to help change the narrative and trajectory surrounding the foster care system. One child, one teen, and one opportunity at a time.

We know the challenges youth face when transitioning out of foster care do not disappear overnight. That is why we are intentionally building programs, experiences, partnerships, and opportunities designed to equip youth for long-term success, independence, and stability.

We are focused on creating real impact and real pathways forward. Not handout — hand up.

There is a lot brewing behind the scenes right now, especially around some future-focused initiatives that we believe can truly make a difference for youth transitioning into adulthood.

But we cannot do this work alone.

We are looking for businesses, business leaders, community partners, and people who believe in investing in the future of young people. People willing to collaborate, mentor, open doors, share expertise, and help us build something meaningful.

While May and National Foster Care Awareness Month may be coming to an end, the need is not.

There are still children entering foster care every day. There are still children waiting for support, encouragement, stability, and community.

Awareness should not stop on May 31st.

Children and youth impacted by foster care still need us in June, July, August and every month after that.
