📚 RTP READ OF THE WEEK: The Day the Crayons Quit 🖍️

Some books make kids read. Some books make kids laugh, think, talk, and see stories in a whole new way. This one does all four!

This week’s RTP Read of the Week is The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers—and it’s a classroom favorite for a reason. 😂

These crayons have had ENOUGH. They’re tired, frustrated, overworked, underappreciated… and they aren’t afraid to say so!

🌟📚 RTP STUDENT SHOUT-OUT: OLIVER! 📚🌟

We are celebrating a BIG reading accomplishment for Oliver! 💛

Oliver recently completed 2 more Just Right Book Club tracking sheets, bringing his total to an amazing 18 books! 🎉📖

And his reading choices have been SO much fun! He’s explored books including:

🐶 Dog Man
🖍️ Creepy Crayons!
⚔️ Warriors — Books 1, 2 & 3!

That’s a whole lot of reading—and even more importantly, a whole lot of growth, confidence, and perseverance. 🙌

But there’s so much more to celebrate about Oliver than the number of books he has read.

Oliver brings so many wonderful strengths to our RTP sessions. He is creative, cheerful, kind, and sweet, and he is always willing to be flexible and try something new. He has an incredible engineering mind, especially when it comes to LEGOS, and his fun personality and hilarious sense of humor make him an absolute joy to be around. 💛🧱😂

These qualities matter. They help build confidence, connection, curiosity, and a willingness to keep going when learning feels challenging—and they have all contributed to the meaningful progress Oliver has made at Reading Through Play.

📚✨ RTP PARENT TEACHING TIP ✨📚
When b & d Get Turned Around… Try Tactile Learning!

Does your child sometimes mix up b and d?

First, take a breath. ❤️
Letter reversals are common in beginning readers and writers. A reversal by itself does not mean a child has dyslexia.

Instead of repeatedly saying, “Remember, b is b!”, give your child a chance to feel the difference.

🖐️ MAKE IT TACTILE
Try forming b and d with:
• Play-Doh
• Sand or salt
• Shaving cream
• A finger traced on a textured surface
• A small tray of rice or flour

As your child makes the letter, have them say the letter name and its sound:
👉 “This is b. /b/.”
👉 “This is d. /d/.”
Then have your child trace it, say it, and write it.

💡 Add a movement cue!
Have your child start at the correct place and form the letter deliberately, rather than relying only on a visual trick or mnemonic.

The goal is to build a stronger connection between:
What they SEE 👀
• What they FEEL ✋
• What they SAY 👄
• What they HEAR 👂
That multisensory connection gives the brain more than one pathway for learning and remembering the letter.

🌟 RTP Reminder:
We don't want children to simply memorize “b has a belly” or “d has a drum.” We want them to become increasingly automatic at recognizing, forming, and connecting letters with their sounds.
Small, intentional practice can make a big difference!
