Van Buren ISD Instructional Services "Ensuring High Levels of Learning and Connectedness for ALL Students"

The Van Buren ISD Instructional Services department is comprised of a unique team of individuals with various expertise working together to provide schools with resources, training and coaching with the whole child in mind. Our team is made up of literacy and math coaches and consultants, MTSS coordinators, Project L.E.A.N. staff, Adult Ed, Continuous Improvement & School Coordinated Health staff,

and over 30 mental health clinicians. Each of us have our own areas of knowledge and training that allow us to collectively assist schools in addressing both learning and social emotional needs for students and staff within and beyond Van Buren County.

This will be a great 3 days for learning. I’m so excited to bring this professional learning opportunity to teachers.

The Van Buren Intermediate School District has been awarded $16,000 through the Michigan Arts and Culture Council to support an exciting new partnership with the South Haven Center for the Arts

This investment will connect local artists with school districts and out-of-school-time programs across Van Buren County, bringing high-quality, hands-on art and music experiences directly to students. Through this initiative, students will explore creativity, build social-emotional skills, and deepen their engagement in meaningful, real-world learning.

This work shows our commitment to providing equitable, enriching opportunities for every student. By leveraging strong community partnerships, we are expanding learning beyond the classroom and creating authentic experiences that inspire and empower.

This initiative is led by Erin Kucharski, coordinator of the Van Buren ISD Instructional Services: Van Buren Youth Initiative, whose work continues to strengthen opportunities and connections for youth across the county. In addition, this collaboration deepens connections between schools and the broader community while supporting local artists as educators and mentors. It stands as a powerful example of how strategic partnerships can elevate both student success and community impact!

VBISD’s Instructional Services Department is leading the way in preparing future educators through the Grow Your Own (GYO) program and strong partnerships with institutions like Western Michigan University.

GYO goes beyond supporting enrollment in degree programs; it creates clear, supported pathways for individuals to enter and advance in the education field, helping build a sustainable, local talent pipeline.

This work was recently highlighted on March 6, when Melissa Corona, Director of Instructional Services, and Geanice Miller, Literacy Coach/Consultant and Grow Your Own Success Navigator, participated in Career Building Professional Development Day at WMU’s Sangren Hall. They conducted mock interviews with education students graduating in May 2026, providing valuable real-world experience and professional feedback.

Through initiatives like these, VBISD continues to invest in people and lead the way in developing a future-ready education workforce.
