As a proud Diné Entrepreneur and Indigenous small business owner, I found the recent comments made about our people deeply disappointing.

When someone visits Gallup; a community that exists alongside the Navajo Nation and in my opinion only exist because of the surrounding reservations. Where many of the customers, clients, and families are Navajo, you would hope they would show respect. Instead, we literally see and hear jokes that demeaned Navajo women and repeated stereotypes about Native people. That’s not humor. It’s disrespect.

What disappoints me just as much is seeing local businesses that rely on the support of the Navajo community publicly associate themselves with this kind of behavior. Every business has the right to choose who they collaborate with, but those choices also reflect the values they are willing to stand behind.

Supporting our local businesses has always been important to me, but respect should be mutual. Our community deserves to be treated with dignity and not as the punchline of someone’s joke or views.

I’m not writing this out of anger. I’m writing this because I believe accountability matters. We can welcome visitors while also expecting them to respect our people, our women, and our communities.

Respect isn’t difficult. It should be the minimum expectation.

Shikéí dóó shidine’é, If you’re a proud supporter, a client, a customer or even a social media follower of these businesses, I would reconsider your support. Actions like this should take accountability for behaviors that are unacceptable.

Today, we honor the fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and father figures who have led our families with strength, wisdom, and unwavering dedication. Like the hands that worked the land before us, their sacrifices planted the seeds that continue to nourish generations.

Thank you for the lessons, the prayers, the hard work, and the love that have shaped who we are. Your legacy lives on in every step we take and every value we carry forward.

Happy Father’s Day with a grateful heart.
