End of Life Reflections…
Arrived for my hospice volunteer shift today.
Informed that things have changed and the patient is sleeping more.
Spouse is stoic, preparing to run errands and going about the day as normal as possible.
Waiting for someone to die is hard.
Spouse informs me that the baby monitor is on and the patient will call for me as needed.
Spouse leaves and I sit quietly in the dining room, listening to the monitor project what sounds like ocean waves and the “pst” sound of patient’s oxygen intake.
It comes to mind that if one chooses to die at home the first step is to sleep, slipping away quietly and surrendering into the process.
Mortality reality is ever so present here.
I sit quietly and hold space for this couple.
This transition that will lead to many new normals; life without the spouse, relief from caretaking responsibilities, solo dinners at home, quiet house and so on.
It’s an adjustment, one that may require the support of family & friends.
Community support is so important and community conversations about dying, death, and grief can help us lean into this natural process that all of us will experience someday.

This experience is one of the many benefits of a consistent yoga practice.

I hear these phrases all the time when I teach balance poses in a yoga class; “My balance is bad”, “I can’t balance at all”, “I’m so wobbly”, or “I need to hold onto something”.
That’s why I teach incremental balancing - easing into a balance pose in stages so everyone can meet their balance where it’s at, practice and improve.
