We were out and about all week long! The Sands Institute set up booths throughout campus during Rebel Ready Week to connect with UNLV's newest Rebels and share the beauty of the Chinese language and culture.

From answering questions to sparking curiosity about all things Chinese, it was amazing to see so many students stop by, engage, and leave with something new!

This week during Rebel Ready Week, students got hands-on with one of China's most treasured art forms, Chinese Calligraphy (书法 shūfǎ). From learning the history behind the strokes to actually painting with traditional materials, it was truly an unforgettable experience.

There's something so special about holding a brush and feeling connected to a tradition that's over 3,000 years old. We loved seeing every single brushstroke come to life!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and gave it a try; you were all amazing! 🙌

Sands Institute was honored to take part in the Symposium on Global Innovation and Digital-Intelligent Transformation of International Chinese Language Education in Indonesia.

As an invited discussant, our representative joined educators, colleagues, and leaders from Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, Vietnam, Korea, England, and South Africa to exchange ideas about the future of Chinese language education in the AI era.

A few memorable moments:
- An opening keynote by Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, exploring the connections among the brain, cognition, and Chinese language learning.

- A cooperative-agreement signing between Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) and East China Normal University in Shanghai, witnessed during a session chaired by the UNS President.

- A visit to 印华学校, where students learn Indonesian, English, Chinese, and Balinese.

We are proud that UNLV was the only U.S. representative at the symposium. It was a wonderful opportunity to introduce Sands Institute to new international partners and strengthen connections across the global Chinese language education community.

Congratulations to our students on their amazing achievements at the Chinese Bridge Speech Competition in San Francisco! 🎉

Christian Schuck earned 3rd Place in the college-level competition as a first-year Chinese learner competing against students who have studied Chinese since elementary school, an incredible accomplishment!

We also celebrate a Las Vegas High School student who earned 3rd Place in the high school-level competition and will be joining UNLV in Fall 2026 to continue studying Chinese.

We are so proud of both students for representing Las Vegas and our Chinese learning community so well! 🇨🇳✨

The Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture hosted a traditional Ink Painting and Chinese Calligraphy workshop for the UNLV community. Expert instructors helped to bring the art of ink painting to life in this exploration of Chinese art and culture. Students also participated in Chinese Calligraphy exercises, turning words into art as well!
