The 8 Disciplines (8D) methodology is a problem-solving approach typically used in quality management and manufacturing for addressing and resolving issues. The method consists of eight structured steps:

1. **D1: Establish a Team**
Form a cross-functional team with the necessary knowledge, time, and authority to solve the problem and implement corrective actions.

2. **D2: Describe the Problem**
Clearly articulate the problem with quantifiable terms, detailing the "who, what, where, when, why, how, and how many" (5W2H) aspects of the issue.

3. **D3: Implement and Verify Interim Containment Actions**
Take temporary actions to isolate the problem from customers and prevent its spread, while verifying the effectiveness of these actions.

4. **D4: Determine and Verify Root Causes**
Identify all potential causes of the problem and verify the root cause(s) through data analysis and testing.

5. **D5: Develop Permanent Corrective Actions**
Identify and plan the permanent corrective actions that will address and eliminate the root cause(s).

6. **D6: Implement and Validate Permanent Corrective Actions**
Execute the planned corrective actions and verify that they effectively resolve the problem without causing new issues.

7. **D7: Prevent Recurrence**
Modify systems, procedures, and processes to prevent the problem from recurring, and share lessons learned across the organization.

8. **D8: Recognize the Team and Individual Contributions**
Celebrate the success of the team and recognize the contributions of all members who helped resolve the problem.

The concept of the 8 wastes comes from Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies. These wastes, often remembered by the acronym "DOWNTIME," are activities or processes that do not add value to the customer. Here are the 8 wastes:

1. **Defects**: Products or services that are out of specification and require resources to correct.

2. **Overproduction**: Producing more than what is needed or before it is needed.

3. **Waiting**: Time lost waiting for the next step in a process, such as waiting for materials, information, or equipment.

4. **Non-utilized talent**: Underutilizing people's skills, talents, and knowledge.

5. **Transportation**: Unnecessary movement of products or materials that does not add value.

6. **Inventory**: Excess products or materials not being processed, leading to increased storage costs and potential obsolescence.

7. **Motion**: Unnecessary movements by people, such as walking, reaching, or searching for tools.

8. **Excess Processing**: More work or higher quality than is required by the customer, often due to poor design or planning.
