The PFFN was honored to play a role in the 100 year anniversary of the Clear Creaks- Kings Canyon Fire. A Promise Kept
In the early morning hours of September 28, 1926, fire broke out near Clear Creek and raced toward Carson City. Nearly 500 men answered the call—firefighters, railroad workers, ranchers, state employees, prison guards and inmates. They came from different walks of life, but on that terrible day, they stood together for one reason: to save their community.
Among them were Fire Chief John M. Chartz, Warren Engine Company President Frank Meder, and F. N. “Fuiro” Dondero, a former Deputy Nevada State Engineer and volunteer firefighter. They survived that terrible fire and carried its memory forward.
Along Kings Canyon Road, a sudden shift in the wind trapped men battling the flames. George Brown, John Mitchell and Ross E. Morres died there. Fire Patrolman Art Sunday and Prison Guard Bryant Whitmore suffered terrible burns and died in the days that followed. Five men were lost, and Carson City was forever changed.
Brown, Mitchell and Sunday were laid to rest at Lone Mountain Cemetery, Morres rests at Stewart Indian Cemetery. Dondero, who risked his own life pulling men from the fire, rests at Masonic Gardens Cemetery in Reno.
Before Brown and Mitchell were buried, Governor James Scrugham pardoned them so they could be laid to rest as free men.
In the sorrow that followed, a promise was made: Carson City would remember.
One hundred years later, we gather to keep that promise—to speak their names, honor their courage, and remember what they gave for this community.
A century has passed. Their courage remains. And Carson City has not forgotten.

Almost a decade ago your firefighters from around the Las Vegas valley responded to the worst tragedy to hit our state. That fateful night showed the power and resilience of our members, other first responders as well as many civilians who stepped up to help. May we never forget all involved AND how we as Nevadans stepped up to help in the days following!
