HOMEWORK DEBATE‼️

As an educator, this has to be one of the TOP 10 topics I have had address over the years.

Why do we have homework? Is it too much? I don't think my child has enough? Can he/she have extra credit homework???And so on....🤦🏻‍♀️

Well, throughout my career, I have formulated my own conclusion. And, before I get to it, let me warn you: you may not like what I have to say😱.

🚸First, let me start with this:
Every student is unique. Period. If you don't
agree it this, you're probably going to reject this info 😉 so if you wanna skip to the bottom of this post and read the articles you can! I have one for each opinion.

👀If I still have your attention, lets get down to it! I truly believe homework is sorely misunderstood. Many teachers require it because it is a way for students to complete work not done in class. Sounds reasonable, right? 👉👉👉WRONG‼️
✖️ When students need extra time to finish work, it usually means they need help in that subject area. Granted, there are some who grasp the concept and fool around so must finish up at home, but for the majority...it is for lack of understanding.

✖️Some teachers will use it as extra credit. Again, not a good idea because those very students who are unable to grasp the info, will never have extra credit. And the over achievers then go into overdrive and exhaust every extra credit up even though they don't need it to begin with.

🤔Think about this, because we can go on forever: many provide homework for students to check if they can do it on their own...as a mini assessment if you will. The problem with that is:
👉frustrated parents or siblings who don't have time or patience tend to give answers and sometimes DO the work to get it out of the way. (Raise your hand...we have all done it once or twice. Lol)
👉some parents may use homework as a personal checkup. The child has to complete the work up to parent standards which may not be the same as teacher expectations. This is very real!
👉and some students hide their homework for one reason or another which usually leads into reasons not even homework related. (more in a blog discussion about this later)
👉and finally, some students just don't want to do WORK all day at home after doing it ALL DAY in school!

Bottom line:
🕒Homework does NOT need to three hours long
🎒Homework should NOT be used as Extra Credit
🚸Be cautious of teachers who GRADE homework. It should NOT affect grades and should only be counted toward responsibility or skills, etc. (Learning outcomes/GLO...whatever they are called now🤣)
👩‍🏫👨‍🏫You and the teacher can come up with a unique strategy for your child and use homework as a tool. Homework is a school to home "Connection" tool that CAN be useful😉

Do you know WHY Dish soap cuts through grease?

🤓The hydrophobic end of the soap molecule will attach to the grease or oil while the hydrophilic end of the molecule attaches to the water.
Once the oil is broken up into smaller drops, it is suspended in the water by the soap molecules. These drops are easily washed away from the surface of your items.
