Mary Isabella Wickenhauser (June 13, 1910 – October 22, 1995), known professionally as Mary Wickes, was an American character actress with a career spanning nearly six decades. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Wickes studied at Washington University before moving into theater and film. Tall, sharp-featured, and quick-witted, she often played nurses, housekeepers, and spinsters, excelling in comedic roles. She gained notice with her Broadway performance in The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939) and reprised her role in the 1942 film adaptation. Her film credits include Now, Voyager (1942), White Christmas (1954), and The Music Man (1962). On television, Wickes was a frequent guest star, appearing in I Love Lucy, Make Room for Daddy, and The Lucy Show. Later generations remember her as the wisecracking Sister Mary Lazarus in Sister Act (1992) and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993). Her final role was voicing the gargoyle Laverne in Disney’s animated classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), released posthumously. Wickes passed away in 1995 at age 85, remembered as one of Hollywood’s most beloved character actresses.
