Dollar Tree math with craft sticks continued....
Activity 2: The Trading Game (Addition with Regrouping)
Goal: Understand carrying.
Example Problem: 28 + 17

Steps:
Build 28.
Add 17. Make sure to keep the tens and ones separated.
Count the ones.
When you reach 10 ones, trade them for a ten bundle.
Add the tens.

What Your Child Sees:
8 ones + 7 ones = 15 ones�Trade 10 ones → 1 ten�Answer: 45
This physical trade makes carrying easy to understand.

Activity 3: Breaking Apart (Subtraction with Borrowing)
Goal: Understand regrouping in subtraction.
Example: 52 – 38
Build 52.
Try subtracting 8 ones.
Not enough? Break apart a ten.
Trade 1 ten for 10 ones.
Subtract.
Your child sees borrowing happen — instead of memorizing a rule.

Activity 4: Multiplication with Groups
Goal: Understand multiplication as repeated addition.
Example: 4 × 13
Build 13.
Make 4 equal groups of 13.
Combine all sticks.
Trade when needed.
Your child sees that multiplication is simply equal groups combined.

Activity 5: Division with Sharing
Goal: Understand division as equal sharing.
Example: 84 ÷ 4
Build 84.
Separate into 4 equal groups.
Break apart tens if needed.
Count how many are in each group.
This builds strong conceptual understanding — not just memorization.

Activity 6: Compare & Challenge
You build a number.
Your child builds a number.
Compare using:
Greater than (>)
Less than (

Hands on math doesn't have to cost a lot. I love using things I find at the Dollar Tree. Over the next week or so I will be posting ideas for learning important math skills using craft sticks and rubber bands:) Here is the first activity.

Activity 1: Build the Number

Goal:
Understand place value (ones, tens, hundreds).

How to Play:
Say a number (example: 47).
Have your child build it using sticks.
They should have 4 tens bundles and 7 ones sticks
Ask:
How many tens?
How many ones?

Example:
47 = 4 tens + 7 ones
For 136:
1 hundred
3 tens
6 ones

Add another math component and ask your child to say the number in expanded form: 40 + 7 for 47 and 100 + 30 + 6 for 136
