What step of the ladder are you on?
What intention have you set for this week?

I was listening to birthday podcast where he talked about the 12 lessons he’s learned in the last 12 months. The one that stood out to me the most was what he said about intentions. I loved it so much I felt it needed a graphic. We should strive to move up the ladder towards Love, one step at a time.

The bottom is Fear. For the last 12 months most people have been motivated by fear and anxiety. However when controlled by fear, we are in a mode of ignorance. To level up, set a target or goal and shift into action and out of inertia, depression, stagnation, and feeling stuck.

Then you are on the next step, Results. Where you are motivated by passion, action, and wanting to get results. This is a good step and one where a lot of people are comfortable. But if you want to go farther, start being a leader, acting from a place of service, and taking responsibility for others.

The Leadership step, where you are motivated by responsibility, accountability, and guiding others. Leadership has changed over time, in the 21st Century to be an effective leader you have to keep growing. This is the first time in history that 4 generations are all in the workforce at the same time! Think about that for a minute. Each generation has different values, motivations, and ideas of rewards. Today’s leader needs to be able to connect the generations so they all learn from each other and grow together. Instead of compete with each other, complain about each other, and feel threatened by each other. To shift up to the last step, turn focus to self-compassion through mindfulness and meditation.

The highest step Love, where one has self-compassion and understands how to use that compassion to help others grow. Modern leaders will be shifting between Love and Leadership. This balance helps others feel heard, valued, and understood. The modern work force will continue to get more diverse. A wise leader will understand how to inspire others to give their best. A little love and compassion goes a long way.

By practicing loving-kindness and mindfulness, one can grow their self-compassion. Sharon Salzberg stated in her book (Real Love: The Art of Mindful Connection), "With Mindfulness, loving kindness, and self compassion, we can begin to let go of our expectations about how life and those we love should be".

When a child looks at the world, they see it through curious eyes. They haven't yet been filled with beliefs, fears, or values. They can only see things as they are, in that present moment. No bias, no judgment, no fears. They are unknowingly being mindful. They absorb what they see, hear, feel, and experience in their surroundings with a beautiful awareness.

Over time as they are subjected to outside influences, their natural curiosity changes. By the time they are adults, the way they view the world is set. Most lose that awareness and self-compassion.

We should take a cue from the children and reconnect our minds, hearts, and bodies. If we keep waiting for the "right time" it will never come. Change only happens when we take action. Practicing mindfulness can rebuild that mind/body connection and unfiltered clarity.

Take the time to journal or give thought to how you see the world. How many biases, beliefs, and fears currently filter your awareness? Are you able to experience the world as it is, unfiltered, non-judgmentally in the present moment? Do you have confidence and self-compassion?

What if I told you that 90% of your beliefs were imprinted on your brain by the age of 6? Sounds unbelievable, but yet it's true. We don't choose to have most of the beliefs we carry through life. Instead what we do is constantly look for confirmations that reinforce those beliefs.

No wonder people utter the phrase "You can't teach an old dog new tricks". We keep ourselves trapped in our limiting beliefs that we didn't even create ourselves! Everything we see, feel, or think about a situation, or religion, or culture, or well....anything different. These have predominately been formed while young and reinforced over our lives. But how do you break the cycle and change those beliefs?

Follow these 3 simple (but not easy) steps:
1. Identify 3 negative beliefs you currently have, and 3 positive beliefs your best self would have. Create new I am statements like, "I used to believe _____, but now I am getting better & better at ______ everyday."
2. Decide you will commit to change, adversity is your advantage! Draw that line in the sand, you are not going to remain as you are, nor will you ever return to the old you. Be willing to keep going when everyone else quits!
3. Control the inputs. Garbage in = Garbage out. Instead of consuming negative inputs, focus on positive ones that help you create the new you. Stop watching news, tv, playing games, & gossiping on social media. Start studying a new skill, reading a book, joining a mastermind group, learning from a mentor, anything that helps you develop the ultimate you.

Take the time to really think about your beliefs, and where they came from. Then you'll know what changes you can make to become your ideal. No dog is too old to learn a new trick, it just takes reflection, repetition and consistency.
