Anxiety isn’t just in your head.
It’s in your chest.
In your racing thoughts.
In the way you rehearse every conversation before it happens.
In the way you overthink… everything.

You’re not lazy. You’re exhausted from trying to hold it all together.
You’re not broken. Your brain is just trying to protect you—on overdrive.

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone.
And you don’t have to stay stuck here.
Let’s talk. One session can change everything.

Part of growing up is learning this life lesson:

We say “sorry” way too often.
Sorry for speaking up.
Sorry for needing space.
Sorry for setting a boundary.

But here’s the truth:
Respecting your needs isn’t rude. It’s healthy.

Tillamook Today on KTIL 05/09/2025

Just wrapped a podcast with KTIL this morning—and what an honor it was!

We talked all things Mental Health Awareness Month—and how important it is to normalize the conversation, especially for teens and young adults. I shared a few of the incredible local resources we have in Tillamook County, from school-based supports to community programs, and of course… I tried to plug my website.

But in true Denise fashion, I completely butchered it on air. So let me do it right here:

Yup, that’s me! Supporting teens and families with real, honest tools for managing anxiety, building confidence, and finding balance.

Thank you, KTIL, for letting me share my heart and voice—and thank YOU, Wheeler and Tillamook County, for being a community that cares deeply about mental wellness.

Let’s keep the conversation going.

Tillamook Today on KTIL Tillamook Today is a live 30 minute radio show on Tillamook's KTIL 95.9. Guests include County Commissioners, local groups and organizations, Port of Tillamook Bay, Tillamook Chamber, Tillamook School District, Oregon Senators/House Representatives, and so many more.

Teen Mental Health Check:
If your brain were a phone, would it be:

• 100% charged
• On low power mode
• Or running 27 apps with 3% battery and refusing to update?

It’s okay to unplug. Recharge. Talk. Cry. Laugh. Ask for help.
Mental health isn’t a weakness—it’s maintenance. Like brushing your teeth… but for your brain.

Teen mental health tip of the day:
Sometimes your teen isn’t ignoring you…
They’re just on a 12-tab emotional browser with three songs playing at once and no idea where the music is coming from.

Be patient. Be curious. Be their calm.
(And maybe bring snacks.)

Let’s Talk About Teens + Confidence (aka the Great Disappearing Act in Middle and High School )

Some teens can walk into a room like they own it.
Others? They’d rather fake a stomach ache and escape through the nearest air vent.

Social anxiety is real — and confidence? It doesn’t just magically show up with age. It’s built, step by step, like a muscle. And trust me, it’s one of the most empowering muscles your teen will ever grow.

So how do we help our teens build confidence without sounding like a walking Pinterest quote?
Here are some hot tips from a coach who’s been there:

1. Normalize the nerves.
Let them know everyone feels awkward sometimes (yes, even that popular kid who looks like they have it all together). Confidence isn’t the absence of nerves — it’s taking action despite them.

2. Shrink the moment.
Instead of “You have to make friends with EVERYONE at this party,” try:
“Just say hi to one person who looks kinda normal and doesn’t have glitter eyebrows.”
Tiny wins. One brave move at a time.

3. Practice power posture.
Teach them to stand tall, chin up, shoulders back — not because posture is magic, but because the brain literally interprets that stance as strength. Bonus points if they strike a superhero pose before school. (Yes, in the bathroom mirror counts.)

4. Rehearse the scary stuff.
Role-play conversations. Practice greetings. Go over “what if” scenarios with humor. When the unknown becomes a little more known, the anxiety shrinks.

5. Celebrate progress, not perfection.
Confidence isn’t loud. It isn’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s just a teen walking into school without their hoodie up. Celebrate it.

You don’t have to fix their social anxiety — you just have to walk beside them while they learn to trust themselves.

**The World Through Their Eyes**

One of the most incredible things about working with teenagers is the perspective shift they offer. When you take the time to truly listen—to step into their world rather than pull them into yours—you start to see life through an entirely different lens.

They feel deeply. They question everything. They crave independence but long for guidance. They are **both fearless and fragile**, navigating pressures we never had to face at their age. And when they trust you enough to share their struggles, their dreams, their doubts—you realize just how much we, as adults, can learn from them too.

Social and emotional wellness isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating a space where they feel safe, heard, and valued. A space where they can learn to trust themselves, to build confidence, to develop the tools they need to face life’s challenges.

Teenagers don’t need us to fix them. They need us to believe in them while they learn to believe in themselves. And when that happens? **That’s where the magic is.**

**"Your mind and body are on the same team—nourish both, and you'll feel the difference."**

So often, we separate physical and mental health, but the truth is, they work together. The food we eat, the way we move, and even how we talk to ourselves can either fuel or drain us.

For my teens struggling with anxiety and self-confidence—small daily habits like deep breathing, movement, and positive self-talk can shift how you feel. And for those on a health journey, remember that taking care of your body also strengthens your mind.

What’s one small thing you can do today to support both?
