🔬 October 23 | Fall Fest Community Event
3–6 p.m. | CYFD Office, Hobbs
Enjoy games, food trucks, costumes, candy and community resources!

🎉 November 7 | NMSU Learn-A-Palooza
10 a.m.–1 p.m. | Outdoor Stage Behind Corbett Center
A FREE family STEAM+ event featuring interactive STEM activities, games, live performances, food and giveaways!

Taking STEM education to new heights! ✈️

Educators recently came together at the Soules Aero-Knowledge Center (AKC) for a two-day aviation professional development experience, exploring aviation careers, connecting classroom learning to real-world applications and discovering new opportunities to bring aviation concepts into their classrooms.

A huge thank you to Bill Soules and the AKC crew for sharing their knowledge and helping inspire the next generation of aviation enthusiasts!

Here’s what’s coming up across STEM:

Good Futures Speaker Series
The three-part series begins Thursday, Oct. 8 with Michael Doxtater, followed by Dr. Gregory Cajete on Oct. 12 and Dr. Janae Nelson on Oct. 14. Sessions are free and open to the public, with in-person and Zoom options available.

Making Math Matter with Spatial Thinking and ArcGIS
Middle and high school math teachers can take part in professional learning focused on spatial thinking, data analysis and classroom-ready ArcGIS activities on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Western New Mexico University.

Discovery Festival
Save the date for a free STEAM+H fair featuring hands-on exhibits in science, technology, engineering, the arts, math and health on Friday, Nov. 20 at Expo NM.

Educators are invited to join monthly Number Talks at Western New Mexico University to build number sense strategies, gain classroom-ready resources and collaborate with teachers across the region.

Here’s what’s coming up in New Mexico STEM:
🧪 Exploring the Possibilities in Valencia County
Students in grades 6–9 are invited to a hands-on STEM conference on October 23 at UNM-Valencia. The event is designed to help students explore STEM careers through technical workshops and hands-on activities.

💧 2026–27 Governor’s STEM Challenge
New Mexico students are invited to tackle this year’s challenge: How can STEM innovation, along with local, traditional and cultural knowledge, help conserve and manage New Mexico’s limited water and natural resources?

The 2026–27 Governor’s STEM Challenge is coming up! Teams will explore this year’s challenge: how we can use STEM + local and cultural knowledge to help protect New Mexico’s water and natural resources.

This week, we’re highlighting STEM opportunities happening across New Mexico!

💻 New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge
Students in grades 5–12 can build a team, choose a computational science project and spend the year tackling real-world problems with support from mentors. Registration is open through September 30, with kickoff happening Oct. 10–11 at New Mexico Tech.

🤖 Route 66 Robot Rally
Coming to Albuquerque Nov. 22–24, this debut robotics event will bring together 100 teams and 500+ students from across the country. Sponsorship, volunteer and expo opportunities are available too.

The 2026-27 NM STEM Innovation Network Mini-Grant RFP is now open! Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals supporting K-12 programming in:
1) Inquiry-Based STEM Learning
2) Access to Out-of-School STEM Learning
3) Strengthened Connections between K-12 Education learning spaces and NM Industry.

The 26-27 priority areas include inquiry-based mathematics or Artificial Intelligence Literacy and Learning. Mini-grants will range from $5,000 to $10,000. Apply through September 17, 2026, by 5:00 pm.

Eligible applying entities include New Mexico: K-12 schools, districts, and education cooperatives Pueblo, Tribal, and other Tribally Controlled Schools & Bureau of Indian Education Schools, Out of School Time providers, For-profit and non-profit organizations, Higher Education Insitutions, Workforce/ Industry partners, and professional learning organizations.

Meet Heidi Franks, Southeast Regional Hub Co-Director for the New Mexico STEM Innovation Network at Eastern New Mexico University–Roswell!

Heidi’s work focuses on STEM outreach, hands-on learning, technology and building partnerships that create meaningful opportunities for students and educators. From 3D printing and drones to virtual reality and laser engraving, she is passionate about using technology to make STEM engaging and accessible.

She also serves as the lead local representative for the STEM Discovery Zone at the National Championship Air Races, helping bring hands-on STEM experiences to students and families across the region.

We’re excited to have Heidi helping strengthen connections and expand STEM opportunities throughout southeastern New Mexico!
