College Professors Warn Incoming Students Lack Basic Math Skills Amid AI Era Education Gaps

University of California professors are raising concerns that incoming college students are entering with significant gaps in foundational math and science knowledge, with some reportedly lacking even middle-school level proficiency.

According to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, faculty members at UC campuses have urged university leadership to reconsider standardized college-entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT. Their argument centers on growing difficulties in introductory STEM courses, where instructors say they are increasingly forced to reteach basic arithmetic and pre-algebra concepts before moving on to college-level material.

In a letter cited by the WSJ, UC math and science professors noted that nearly one-third of students in first-semester calculus at UC Berkeley demonstrate what they describe as โ€œsevere preparation deficits.โ€ They warned that these gaps are straining instructional resources across disciplines including engineering, economics, and the physical sciences.

The debate comes after many universities made standardized tests optional in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics of these exams argue they reinforce socioeconomic inequality, as access to test preparation is uneven. However, some elite institutions, including MIT, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Yale, have since reinstated testing requirements, signaling a partial reversal of test-optional policies.

Educators also point to broader shifts in academic performance and integrity since the widespread adoption of AI tools in education. Some studies suggest increased AI use may be associated with weaker critical thinking and reduced retention of material, while grade inflation has also been reported in several subject areas.

Supporters of reinstating entrance exams argue they may help better identify preparedness gaps early. Critics counter that standardized testing does not address underlying inequities in education and may worsen access issues for disadvantaged students.

As universities grapple with these challenges, the broader concern among educators is whether current systems are adequately preparing students for quantitative and technical fields in an era increasingly shaped by AI-driven learning tools.

๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค”๐Ÿค” SAT/ACT?

More than 1,100 University of California math and science professors are urging UC regents to reinstate college-entrance exams, saying that unprepared students are lowering academic standards and draining teaching resources.

The request, delivered in a two-page letter last week, cites a sharp decline in readiness among students studying science, technology, engineering and math. Nearly one-third of students taking first-semester calculus at UC Berkeley โ€œdisplayed severe preparation deficits,โ€ the letter said.

โ€œWe now observe preparation gaps so severe that instructors must reteach middle-school mathematics while simultaneously teaching the material students need for sciences, engineering, economics, and other quantitatively demanding fields,โ€ the faculty wrote.

โ€œUC has finite resources and can help only so many students.โ€

James Maynard: The Prime Number Genius Who Changed Prime Number Theory

For centuries, mathematicians have wondered:
How close together can prime numbers occur infinitely often?

In 2013, James Maynard introduced a powerful new multidimensional sieve method and proved that there are infinitely many pairs of primes differing by at most 600.

It was one of the most significant advances toward the legendary Twin Prime Conjecture in modern times.

But that was only the beginning.
He also obtained major breakthroughs on: ๐Ÿ”น Large gaps between primes
๐Ÿ”น Clusters of primes in short intervals
๐Ÿ”น The long-standing Duffin-Schaeffer Conjecture

For these extraordinary contributions, Maynard was awarded the prestigious Fields Medal in 2022.

Even in the 21st century, some of the deepest mysteries of mathematics remain hidden among the prime numbers, and James Maynard has helped reveal a few of their secrets.
