🌍 Highlights from the Conference in Dakar!

MSU Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics FSG PRCI Lab had the privilege of working to strengthen local institutions for sustainable food systems transformation in Africa this week!

The discussions at this year’s conference are driving impactful change by addressing critical issues like climate resilience, soil health, market integration, and more. It's inspiring to see leaders, researchers, and policymakers collaborating to transform agriculture across Africa.

🔎 Mutual Accountability and Actions for Transformative Change

Dr. Madina Guloba from EPRC Uganda took the stage at the Annual FTF Innovation Lab Council Meeting to discuss how Innovation Labs are supporting governments with research and capacity building. Madina emphasized the importance of mutual accountability and the power of evidence-sharing to drive transformative change in food security policies.

Other panelists included Robin Shrestha, Katrin Kuhlmann, and Stephen Reichley, moderated by Erin McGuire of Horticulture Innovation Lab. 🌱

During this week's USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab Council 2024 Regional Partner’s Meeting, FSG’s Professor Saweda Liverpool-Tasie briefs the Innovation Lab directors on the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development’s (BIFAD) report and recommendations to USAID regarding climate change research.

BIFAD is a presidentially appointed advisory board working to ensure USAID brings the assets of U.S. universities to bear on development challenges in agriculture and food security.

This week, USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab leaders, many of their local partners, government officials from Nepal and other key stakeholders are coming together for the USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab Council 2024 Regional Partner’s Meeting, “Translating Research to Action – Opportunities for Evidence-Based Scaling of Agri-Food Systems Innovations.” Hosted in Kathmandu, Nepal, this gathering provides opportunities for learning across Labs and partners regarding their experience in bringing Lab innovations to scale.

David Tschirley, director of the USAID-funded Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy Research, Policy and Influence (PRCI), set the tone of the gathering in one of the meeting’s two keynote addresses. In his presentation, entitled “Innovation, localization, and the messy path to nth-best scaled solutions." The bottom-line message from Tschirley’s presentation is that transformation and innovation are happening without any input from ILs, and the job of ILs is to understand these processes of transformation and “figure out how to bring added value to them” through their research and potential innovations.
