The first question I ask every client, at the start of every session, is exactly the same. How are you feeling today?
For most of my life, I've been a proud and vocal member of the "less thought, more FEEL" tribe. This is not a tribe of non-intellects, irresponsible or careless people. Quite the opposite!
In the "more feel" tribe we CHOOSE to start each day with our feelings. We get in touch with how we feel before we rev up our engine brains that run the day. For me, I allow for an hour each morning before my "thought day" begins. I step outside of my head and wander into the fresh air and open skies of the living, feeling world. I make a strong cup of coffee, grab a biscotti and breathe in as much fresh air - whether summer or winter - as my lungs will take. Then I snuggle under my cozy blanket on my deck. Every morning!
We can all feel any number of ways on any number of days. These feelings come and they go. Some days I feel more worried, a little afraid, or a tinge of uncertainty. Lately I've noticed more anxious feelings, more irritability, and a stronger desire for more alone time.
But when I fully sink into my "feeling time" and take some deep breaths and place my hand on my heart, I feel an instant sense of calm. I feel comfort. I feel the SELF-love.
My thoughts still fight for my full focus in these moments, but that hand on my heart and the deep breaths in and out are my signal to the thoughts that this is FEELING TIME. This is my "reset-the-soul" time. I gently tell my thoughts to pause and I continue my feel time.
I didn't invent the "hand-on-heart" daily check-ins. It's been here for all of us from the start! My amazing life coach Joni, (who is also an MSW) reminds me on a regular basis that it's always right there for me. These are the four steps I take every day:
1. I pause my thoughts several times a day. I literally STOP what I am doing and...
2. I place my hand on my heart. Then...
3. I ask "how am I FEELING in this moment?" And then...
4. I take four slow, deep inhales (through my nose). I hold for four seconds and then I release four slow exhales through my mouth. I count to 6 as I exhale and I make that swooshing sound as I release my breath slowly.
It is so comforting! It brings my conscience fully to my FEELS and puts my thoughts on hold for the moment. I have been practicing this for a year now. It works.
Our time on this precious Earth is so limited. Let us recognize this, accept this, and get in touch with our feelings every day! May we learn to relax into our feelings more often than our thoughts. To let our feelings guide our decisions and not the other way around.
I wish you joyful feelings and peace today!! Amen.
