By definition, common preeminence is an oxymoron.

The research on common preeminent school leaders serves to illuminate the powerful impact they have on the lives of the teachers, staff, and students at their schools.

Last night, we were driving in the car & saw the full moon starting to make its appearance.

I made a comment about the full moon, and thinking about school, I said, “You know what that means!” My 7 year old said, “Yea! Mrs. Snyder tells us all about full moons!”

If you’re like me… my mind went straight to the assumption that our students will be off the chain. They will be making crazy decisions and the teachers & staff will leave campus disheveled and exhausted.

Then, my daughter continued. “Mrs. Snyder says when there is a full moon, the kids in her class make the best decisions! We are kind, brave, and work hard! It’s a magic moon, Mom!”

And for a moment I just sat and thought about the impact our words have on our students.

Have we been creating more chaos on full moon days because we expect the kids to act that way?

Perhaps shifting our mindsets won’t fix all of our full moon problems, but I won’t forget what I learned from Mrs. Snyder.

Speak positivity into our students. What we say will change the perspectives of our students, and maybe their parents, too.

When parents ask what they can do to help their kids be successful at school, the best advice is this..

Kids do what they see. They aspire to their environments. Model what you want your children to value. You’re looking for ways to help your child in school? Read. Read to yourself. Read to them. Teach them to love stories.

Loving text is the beginning of all academic successes.

It’s Friday!! Remember to offer yourself some love & grace today! You’ve got this! 💪

How do young children self-regulate? They don't! Adults are children's regulators and co-regulators. How we respond to children's upset will inhibit or enhance their self-regulatory skills.

Unless we actively intervene to calm ourselves, a child's upset tends to trigger our own CD-ROM (the Emotional State's pre-programmed false messages from childhood), and we are left repeating the same false messages to the next generation.

The Executive State of the brain represents the CEO of the brain, a magnificent integrated system within us that allows us to regulate our thoughts, emotions, and behavior and override the impulses of the lower centers of the brain. Instead of overreacting from our CD-ROM of the Emotional State, the Executive State allows us to pause and plan a wise response. This pause is where self-regulation occurs.
