Palm Beach State College proudly welcomed more than 200 students to the Lake Worth campus today for the start of the NextGen Summer Bridge Program, which runs through June 18.

Students had the opportunity to hear firsthand about the college experience during an alumni panel led by Destiny Keen, associate dean of academic readiness and retention. Alumni shared insights, advice and personal stories to help students prepare for their transition to college.

Designed for high school graduates and first-generation students, the two-week program helps participants build confidence, connect with campus resources and develop the skills needed for success in higher education.

"I didn’t really know what I wanted to study or what college was even supposed to look like for me. I’m the first person in my family to graduate, so everything felt new and kind of overwhelming. I knew I wanted more for myself, I just didn’t know how I’d get there."

For students like Sondarly Tilus, the Stephen M. Ross Emerging Scholars Program makes receiving a higher education possible.

As one of the first graduates of the program, Tilus received a full-tuition scholarship to Palm Beach State College, plus mentorship and guidance throughout academic journey. Because of all the support she received, she'll continue her education at PBSC with hopes of one day becoming a NICU nurse.

Palm Beach State College welding students turned raw metal into a powerful symbol of freedom and patriotism.

As part of a statewide welding and fabrication competition held by the Florida Department of Education to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, a team of 11 PBSC welding students created “Forged Freedom,” a massive eagle sculpture representing the nation’s past, present and future.

The sculpture stands 7 feet, 7 inches tall, spans 6 feet wide and weighs 325 pounds. Using plasma cutting and MIG welding techniques, students dedicated more than 350 hours over three weeks to complete the project.

📹 Watch the video below to see the sculpture unveiled.
