Our final TEDxLFC speaker is Tony Wilkins, an early stage private investor! His talk is called “Engineering Serendipity (for an Even Better Future Than You’d Planned). We spend too little time creatively thinking about controlling what we can control and too much time worrying about what we cannot. Serendipity plays a major role in what happens in our lives, but we often miss the opportunities it brings because we’re too focused on solutions to which we are often unnecessarily committed. Cultivating the practice of serendipity improves the chances that we can experience a future that is even better than we imagined.

Our second to last speaker is Michelle Silverthorn. She is the Founder and CEO of Inclusion Nation, a diversity consulting and education firm. Her talk is titled “They Still Call Me the Nanny: Moving Beyond Unconscious Bias and into Real Inclusion.” In 2018, Starbucks closed its stores after a manager called the police on two black men waiting at a table. The months that followed brought a rash of incidents of white people calling the police on people of color in a college dorm, BBQing in a public park, touring a university campus, and selling water on the side of the road. Each time an incident was reported, cries of racism came to the fore. And yet, if you ask any of those people, they likely would say, “I’m not racist,” or “I don’t see color.” How do we reconcile that? That’s where unconscious bias enters in. How do we interpret bias? How do we see truth? And, crucially, how can we transform our thinking so we see people for who they are, not who we think they should be?

Next is Madeleine Karlsson! She is a Nutrition Coach and a passionate advocate for whole foods and intuitive eating. Her talk is called “Why Trusting Your Gut is the Best Diet.” Eating is one of the most basic skills yet millions of people are still confused about what makes a healthy diet and are unsure of how to improve their eating habits. As obesity rates and chronic diseases soar, the diet industry continues to expand right along with our waistlines. Are we looking for information about eating in all the wrong places?
