Excellent advice for Challenge students--who have busy schedules!
Tailoring Challenge to Your Life
My favorite thing about CC is that I am still in charge of my homeschool. Here is one way to tailor Challenge to fit any season of life.
First thing is to always plan a schedule of your week so you know how much time they have for each strand for that week. It is hard to scale if we do not know what we are scaling to. Second have your top three subjects that are most important for that semester. Next list the other subjects in descending order of importance for that time in their life. My youngest is in her second semester of Challenge IV. Her top three this semester are Math, SAT prep, and competitive debate. She plays travel softball and we travel for debate competitions so some weeks are very scaled back. After she lays out her week, the first things she adds to her day is her top three subjects. Make sure they add in enough time for chores, devotions, meal prep, etc. Their schedule should be doable. Next she adds in the other subjects, scaling the time to make what she has to do fit her schedule. We always look at seminar time to make sure she will be prepared to participate in class and add to the conversation. Some weeks she may only have 30 minutes to prepare for Ancient Lit. On those weeks she will watch a youtube summary of the chapter, 10 minutes, then read a section from Heroes of the City of Men and write out some questions for her class, 20mintes. That’s it! But she is fully prepared to participate in seminar. I never let her skip anything. Instead of skipping, we scale. So if she has a 750 word paper due but only has one hour to work, she will write a speech, or speak from an outline. This allows her to practice her skills and contributes to her seminar time for the benefit of everyone. It is very hard as a Challenge director when students are not prepared with something for class. Even speaking about their thirty minutes of research is so much better than not presenting anything.
