Black Birth Matters is a conference that centers the black birthing experience. Black birth experiences will be centered.

is a one-day convergence of conversation, film, and art on the issues at the intersections of birth justice and racial justice. We’re honored to spotlight Crystalyn Whitaker Nelson as part of Black Birth Matters: Community Conversations in Shreveport. 🖤

A Shreveport native creative, educator, vocalist, and the current Caddo Parish Poet Laureate, Crystalyn uses art, storytelling, and community connection to inspire healing across generations.

Known on stage with Tipsey the Band and through her work uplifting community voices, her artistry reflects the power of culture, creativity, and collective care. Through poetry, music, and education, she continues creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and connected.

Originally from New Orleans and now based in Bossier City, Fatima is a trained doula through Sista Midwife Productions and a passionate advocate for community-centered birth support.

Her work reflects the heart of this movement — showing up for families with compassion, care, and culturally rooted support during one of life’s most important journeys.

Black birth work is powerful because of doulas like Fatima helping families feel seen, heard, and supported. 🖤
