Mr. Caleb Burnett Biology class has been busy this week investigating our backyard ecosystems!
We put our lesson of population density and distribution into action! Each class went outside and counted the blades of grass on the Band practice field. We had conditions for what qualified as grass. Based on some research, we determine that the larger blades of grass could have possibly been Bermuda grass. We did not count the smaller grass, weeds, or clovers.
We completed this “field lab” by using the quadrant sampling method to see the density and distribution of our grass population. We used our quadrant sampling method to estimate the amount of grass on the band practice field. We were also able to see the distribution of the grass. In some areas, there was a higher density of grass and other areas the population was more distributed. Each class averaged around 20 blades of grass per one square foot quadrant and calculate a total of 1,600,000 blades of grass!
