We encourage you to take some time and give this a watch.
Black ash basketry carries generations of knowledge — knowledge held, practiced, protected, and generously shared by basket makers and families who continue this work.
At GLLI, we are deeply grateful for the people who have taught us and allowed us to learn alongside them. That learning continues to move through our work in very practical ways.
Over the past few years, community members have come together to make black ash corn-washing baskets — not simply as an exercise in learning a skill, but as useful gifts made for one another and for partners in our Giiwekii Flint Corn Project. These baskets are being put to work washing and processing corn, connecting one living practice to another.
Most importantly, we encourage folks to learn more about the black ash basket makers themselves, the people carrying this knowledge, and the teachers who have shared so much with us.
Give the film a watch, and keep learning.
