โJust be you. Live boldly. No one cares.
As a very publicly out q***r person these statements that Iโve heard most of my life both liberate and restrict my and othersโ expression. They create deep ambivalence for many of us who navigate the daily and ongoing process of โComing Outโ in various aspects of our lives.
By and large, I am fully supported by UCSD students, staff, and faculty as a Q***r brown boy. But itโs not as simple to come out and live authentically, boldly, and true to oneself despite many individualsโ beliefs in this after-marriage equality era.
I say this confidently because of my own experience and as a co-facilitator for the Coming Out Group with Dr. Cat Thompson. Every week I hear beautiful, heart-breaking stories from students who are anxiously navigating their identity, especially for our genderq***r and transgender students. This group allows students to explore and navigate feelings and thoughts regarding oneโs own gender, gender expression, and sexual orientation, discussing real and perceived challenges in coming out.
Iโve met many resilient and thoughtful UCSD community members who are all reaching for the same thing-- a life of dignity unencumbered by social pressures and expectations.
For this reason, I live a very public life as a Q***r man to recognize all who identify as Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Q***r (LGBTQ+) are far from equality and equity, and the intersection of other marginalized and minoritized social identities. I chose to refer to myself as Q***r because of the power of this term. Q***ring the experiences and structures of the University allows us to question, transgress, blur and challenge โnormsโ for the liberation of all people.
I hope that by being publicly out, that me living life in color allows someone elseโat their own pace and comfort levelsโto live authentically.โ

โ
Madhu has been an activist since she was 16 years old. When she came to UC San Diego she wanted to continue making a difference. In an effort to do so she joined various groups on campus to make a difference on a wide range of issues. Specifically, she joined UCSD CALPIRG students where she was able to run campaigns and make a difference on the campus, local and state level. โ
โ
Additionally, has been able to build up other UCSD students who are passionate about change. She believes that building up others to make change is what being a is really about. Specifically, she accomplished this by organizing the first ever Student Activist Training Summit at UCSD. With the help of her team and campus partners, they have been able to train and build up over 50 students to be effective activists and changemakers themselves. โ

Madhu created a space for activism on campus and helped students become leaders, and conduits of social change. Madhu embolden students to make a difference.โ
