Introduction to Southeast Asian Martial Culture.
Indonesian martial arts or Pencak Silat come from the island nation of Indonesia. The systems we teach generally come from Java & Sumatra, specifically Sundanese & Minangkabau cultures. Pencak is known as a quaint little dance in different forms like jurus, palaradan, randai and silat is the hidden applications contained in the dance known as bauh. It is believed that you must learn both. Traditionally Silat is taught empty hands first then weapons. Indonesian weapons range from traditional knife/machete(gulok)/sai(trisula) to the most specialized karambit/sarong/keris(kris). Our source is the Suwanda family of martial arts; Pak Herman Suwanda, Ibu Rita Suwanda, Pak Bambang Suwanda in these schools Mande Muda silat, Sunda silat, Mande Tri Suwanda. Our silat teachers/mentors include guru Steve Fristoe, Bernard Chong & Bahadti Merchant.
Filipino Martial Arts or also known as Kali, Eskrima & Arnis come from the Filipino island nation. Known as a stick fighting martial art, it is a very diverse system. FMA makes the fighting culture very easy to understand & can be the fastest most efficient way to learn the many forms of combat, from grappling to projectile weapons. With basic instruction using Filipino concepts, one can study motion on their own for a lifetime. FMA starts with weapons first then moves into empty hands. Knife is the key to the depths of knowledge, exposing the truth to core motions. Our teachers & schools; Guru Steve Fristoe & Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts, Bahadti Merchant & Soyac Kali and many other mentors through many workshops & seminars.
