With the absence of a native apex predator our local ecosystems remain unbalanced with flora and fauna out of check and out of whack... Its not just about analyzing for our current conditions and adjusting with what we have, but looking to the past and what is missing in our native ecos. What effects have arisen from their absence? Reintroduction of these "lost" species is a key component to restoration of a balanced and healthy ecosystem.

Europeans, fed by big, bad wolf myths, began killing them when they arrived on the continent. By 1900, the creatures synonymous with the wild frontier had been driven to near-extinction in the lower 48 states.

A fantastic job between agencies and partnerships enabled a super successful project here locally just downriver from Seiad Valley. A culvert on Ft. Goff Creek under the Hwy. 96 road bed cut off a very important watershed for salmonids during low flows. Typically the sort of flows we see during spawning season. Opening of that passage has enabled access to the cold water refugia and opened up the historic fisheries to a crucial watershed in the Middle Klamath. Removing a barrier and building a bridge. Thanks to all who made this possible.

Elk Habitat and Meadow Restoration on public lands in the Middle Klamath. With the cooperative efforts and parnerships between FS, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Mule Deer Foundation this project is coming together successfully. As you can see from the evidence in pic #5 Roosevelt Elk have been utilizing the the meadow and surrounding thinned woodlands recently. There is also abundant Blacktail Deer pellets throughout. The new hardwood sprouts from thinning in pic #3 are supplying crucial feed during the drought. With cooperative efforts and parnerships of NGO's and FS thinking together outside the box with an emphasis on proactive land stewardship projects we are seeing the results of a more balanced ecosystem.
