Each student is an individual and needs to be known by his/her teacher. Education is more than memorizing formulas, dates and dead people. Children can learn to actively engage their brains and get excited about the world around them. Too often schools teach children to kill time and disengage. One caring and dedicated teacher can change a child's life. I want to be that spark th

at brings joy and life back to learning. I have worked for many years helping homeschool parents succeed and I have tutored students educated in both private and public schools. I can tutor or teach classes in reading, writing/grammar, history, literature, mathematics, Latin, science, nature study, performing arts and fine arts- including fiber arts and sewing. My specialty outside of mathematics is elementary education. In mathematics I specialize in the Singapore Math method and I love to teach and tutor up through Algebra and Geometry. Two Little Pigs Tutoring began with two real little pigs- Charlotte Mason and Piggy Sue. They live here on our tiny farm in Kingston, WA with two little cows- Molly and Moo, ten chickens and an English Shepherd named Rosie. When I am not tutoring or teaching classes I am actively learning to preserve the heritage skills of spinning, weaving, gardening, farming, and preserving.

The brain is an interesting study. To really learn to use our brains we need to be challenging ourselves- reading, reasoning, figuring things out, finding connections, wondering, searching, experimenting, and pondering. And yet our modern world often seems built to lull us into complacency.

True education requires retrieval skills. Roads must be created in the brain. As students grapple with ideas, make predictions, and find connections, those roads become highways. It is key for students to practice remembering information without looking at notes or textbooks.

Growing up without a television and without computers and cell phones contributed greatly to my love of reading. Unfortunately my love of math did not become apparent until college. The schools did a great job of making math into lists to be memorized and formulas to be used without any mental engagement. It wasn't until college that I began to discover the "why" behind those formulas. Math became a living language.
