York is a coastal town in southern Maine between Kittery and Ogunquit, positioned along the Atlantic just north of the New Hampshire border. It is accessible via I-95, U.S. Route 1, and Route 1A, making it one of the first major stops after entering Maine from the south.

The coastline includes Long Sands Beach, Short Sands Beach, York Harbor, and Cape Neddick Harbor, along with a series of rocky headlands typical of this stretch of coast. Offshore at Cape Neddick sits Nubble Lighthouse, one of the most recognizable coastal landmarks in New England.

Just inland, Mount Agamenticus rises to 692 feet as a prominent monadnock, offering a sharp contrast to the low-lying shoreline and supporting an extensive trail network with wide regional views.

York borders Kittery, Ogunquit, Eliot, South Berwick, and Wells, forming part of the broader southern Maine coastal corridor defined by beaches, harbors, and protected recreational landscapes.

Cape Breton Island

Cape Breton Island lies off the northeastern coast of mainland Nova Scotia in eastern Canada.

At a glance, it hardly appears to be an island. Zoom in on a map, however, and you'll see it is separated from the mainland by the narrow Strait of Canso.

The western portion of the island is home to Cape Breton Highlands National Park, part of the Canadian Appalachian Mountains. The island's highest point is White Hill (1,738 ft / 530 m).

The park is also home to the Cabot Trail, a 185-mile (298 km) scenic loop through the highlands.

Newfoundland and Labrador is the most eastern province of Canada with the most easterly point being Cape Spear on Newfoundland.

Newfoundland is a large island off the mainland, while Labrador is part of the mainland adjacent to Quebec.

The northern reach of the Canadian Appalachians is along the west coast of Newfoundland. At 2,664', the Cabox is the highest point of the Long Range Mountains. It is part of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT). The range includes Gros Morne National Park which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

While the mountains of Newfoundland are Appalachian, the mountains of Labrador belong to the Canadian Shield.

The Black Dirt Region, or "The Drowned Lands" is centered in southern Orange County, New York and extends into northern New Jersey.

It hosts a massive deposit of a rare and incredibly fertile black soil that supports an iconic agricultural area.

The northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail is at Mount Katahdin in northern Maine, but this is not the end of the ancient range.

The Appalachians continue into New Brunswick and Quebec. They are separated from the Canadian Shield by the St. Lawrence River.

They are also present on the island of Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) as the Cape Breton Highlands.

The Long Range Mountains on the western portion of the island of Newfoundland are the northernmost reach of the Appalachians in Canada.

Airline Trail - Pomfret, CT

I love experiencing my home state as a traveler and seeing new things and also old things from a new perspective.

I’ll be in the northeastern part of the state for a few weeks which is a world away from the New Haven area.

Rail Trails were a big part of my winter in the Hudson Valley. Looking forward to exploring more of the Airline Trail which is over 50 miles in total.
