Various methods for building and using outdoor fires for warmth and cooking.

• Teepee Fire (Top Left): Though not explicitly labeled, this is the classic conical shape used for quick heat and light.

• Lean-to (Top Right): Logs are leaned against a larger "backstop" log, which helps shield the flame from wind and directs heat in one direction.

• With Reflector (Middle Left): A wall of stacked logs is built behind the fire to reflect radiant heat toward the user or a shelter.

• With Platform (Middle Right): Stones are used to create a stable base for a cooking pot, allowing the fire to burn underneath without the pot smothering the flames.

• Criss-cross Log (Middle Left, Lower): Logs are stacked in a "cabin" style (perpendicular layers). This creates a long-lasting fire with a stable flat top for cooking.

• Underground (Middle Right, Lower): Often called a "Dakota Fire Hole," this involves a pit for the fire and a separate air vent. It is efficient, low-profile (produces less visible light), and focuses heat upward.

• Cranes for Cooking (Bottom Left): This shows several ways to use notched sticks or crossbeams to hang pots over a fire at various heights.

• Hobo Stove (Bottom Right): A fire contained within a metal drum or large can with a "door" cut out at the bottom for airflow and feeding fuel.
