Humans of Maui Hello! My name is Lily and I am currently a senior at Kihei Charter High School. For my senior project I have decided to create Humans of Maui.

I have a passion for people and photography and seeing the page Humans of New York really inspired me to create my very own Humans of Maui page. Our little Island of Maui is filled with such beautiful, unique, eccentric and amazing people! We definitely deserve our own page :)

Hopefully this page will bring community unification, inspire you, make you laugh, smile and maybe even cry a little! Watch out Humans of Maui... I'm coming for ya! Let the journey begin :)

The legendary Chef Sheldon Simeon

"One day I was sitting down waiting for a ride not knowing that I was outside a college internship program for Walt Disney World. The recruiter walked outside and said, 'Oh, I thought I was done with everyone.' I said,' Oh no no I'm just waiting for a ride.' And then he asked me if I ever thought about doing an internship at Walt Disney World. I said okay sure! So I go to Walt Disney World and I meet a Maui girl. It was the day after Valentine's Day. On Valentine's Day me and 2 other Hawaii guys cooked this crazy feast with all hawaiian food and we invited all the girls in our complex. It was just us 3 guys and like 20 other girls. The power of food I tell you! haha. I ended up marrying that Maui girl and we now have 4 kids."

"My parents are definitely my biggest inspiration. My mother passed away 8 years ago but I call my dad the best chef I know. Even though he's not a chef by trade but because his food is just so delicious. He's one of those people that I learned to cook from and I know all his exact recipes almost to the point of when to add the salt and when to stir. I mean my food is good but there is just something about his food. There's something about it like when I see people eating it they look so happy. For me, that is better than wowing a chef with swiping the sauce across the plate and making it look all frilly looking. For me, it's the feeling people get when they eat your food. That's what is most important to me."

Happy Hump Day fellow Humans of Maui! :)

This is uncle Kimo. His infamous pick up line to the ladies is," Hey! You're prettier than me!" He told me he buys towels from Costco and then has a lady turn them into suits for him like the one pictured. He has 12 different suits being tailored right now!

"Kuau mart became your home away from home to many. You could take now and pay later. It was a family kind of store. One of the boy's father got into a bad accident and he would always pay there bill. The father lost his memory for awhile. The only thing he remembered was that he had to go to our store and pay their bill. Isn't that something? In the store we had a kitty. But it wasn't a kitty. It was money for when we didn't have money. We called it the richest kitty in the world. It paid for a lot of things that the kids didn't have money for. The older boys would fill up the kitty for the younger new kids. The kitty was never stolen from the store. When we closed Kuau Mart it made every single news paper."

"I fear that because there are so many people coming to Hawaii, we will keep losing stuff like our history, memories and places. We are strong and a lot of us are educated and know our history. I just wish people would learn our history and understand who we are and that we exist. There are people who don't think we exist. Europe and other foreign countries totally learn about us before they come. Americans don't really care. Isn't that sad? They see it as just being another state. Even though we don't recognize it as another state. My biggest regret in life was that I didn't know my history sooner. I could've done so much with it. My advice to give is to learn our history and culture and to respect the land, people and everything. Also, you must always remember to never judge. "
