University of Miami Broad Key Research Station UM's latest Research Station. 63-acre island just off Key Largo

This 63-acre island complete with a main house, dock and boathouse is located just off the coast of Key Largo. UM Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science professors and students will use this stunning location to study the dynamic marine and terrestrial ecosystems that exist in the area. Coral reefs teeming with fish, unspoiled mangroves and various animal populations await researchers w

ho take the short 45-minute boat ride to Broad Key’s shores. The quick and direct access will be beneficial to researchers, allowing for frequent year-round data collection and analysis. With permanent accommodations for 20 individuals, the main house is nestled in the middle of the island and offers panoramic views from its top floor. From atmospheric science to marine biology, faculty and students will conduct important research that will help us better understand the Florida Keys and beyond.

Earlier this summer we at Broad Key Research Station lost a great man, naturalist, and very dear friend. Its taken me a while to post this, largely because I've been in a sort of denial. The island doesn't feel the same, and literally every rock and tree holds a memory of him. I hope he'll be watching down on us as we try to move forward. We'll miss you always Jeff Demott (Dec. 13, 1957-July31, 2021).

Our little island got very lucky during hurricane Irma. We never lost power and only had minor damage to the structures with no damage to infrastructure. The biggest hit was to our trees and foliage. Our hearts go out to everyone in the keys who lost so much more.
