Campus Visits: Preview Days
Many universities invite applicants to campus for a preview day. This is a great opportunity for prospective students to learn about the school, and experience the excitement of campus. Of course, this is a promotional event, so while fun, it might not give you the authentic experience of visiting on a regular school day.

Check your email inboxes for invitations from the schools, or visit their websites to sign up.

What changes have you seen lately in the college admissions process?

Washington Post’s 7 Ways College Admissions Is Changing
1. Some schools are dropping supplemental essays
2. More top schools are requiring ACT or SAT scores
3. Early decision is increasingly important in selective admissions
4. International students are a big unknown this year
5. Continued fallout from the Supreme Court ruling ending race-conscious admissions
6. AI entering both essay-writing and admissions review on the college side.
7. You can get into the vast majority of U.S. colleges since they are not highly selective and accept most applicants.

Colorado School of Mines
Campus visit, June 2026
Colorado School of Mines is a hidden gem, with strong engineering programs, as well as other STEM majors, providing direct career pathways into the Colorado economy. Golden is an adorable town, with an authentic western history and many cute shops and delicious restaurants. Laden with outdoor opportunities, it’s located along a river and with the Rocky Mountains in the distance. While the Coors corporate headquarters moved to Chicago in 2019, the historic brewery remains in Golden. There is a lot of construction across campus, a sign of investment and growth.

During a trip down the California coast, I stopped at UC Santa Cruz. Nestled in the redwoods and only a few miles from the beach, the campus looks and feels like a summer camp or national park. While the vibe of campus has not changed since I last visited in the 1990s, there have been new additions, such as the Music Center and the Jack Baskin School of Engineering.
