Earlier this week, the library classroom at KHS transformed into a cozy café for a Historical Fiction Book Tasting with Mr. Mishou’s AP Seminar class! Students explored historical fiction books with the backdrop of relaxing coffee shop music and lighting. Safe to say the “menu” was a hit—almost every student walked away with a book they’re excited to dive into! 📚

Retired KPS librarians Kelly Melson and Hallie Hagan are now published authors! 🥳 Their new book, Girls Wrestling A to Z, is now available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble.

We are so incredibly proud of Kelly and Hallie for this amazing accomplishment! 💙 Congratulations on bringing this wonderful book to readers everywhere—we can't wait to get our hands on a copy and start reading!

🎉 Huge kudos to Stefanie Green and Shantel Eatherton for leading some FANTASTIC professional development for our middle and high school teachers today! 👏📚

Teachers explored a variety of topics related to news literacy and gained valuable insights into helping students become informed, critical consumers of information. 📰🔍

The best part? They had the opportunity to collaborate and discover creative ways to incorporate these essential skills into their own curriculum. We're excited to see the impact this learning will have in classrooms across our district! 🌟

The 8th grade Intro to Journalism/Yearbook class at Sunrise Middle School wrapped up their novel study of That's Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger with an interview with the author herself! Students submitted questions asking about her writing process and about the book itself. That's Not What Happened is a tale of what can happen when the media takes a story and runs with it, even when it turns out to not be the truth. It invokes a lot of thought around ethical journalism, whose stories get to be told, and who gets to tell those stories. Kody Keplinger was also kind enough to give the class a sneak peek of her newest book for ages 12+ called Where Lost Girls Go, which comes out July 7, 2026!

Did you know that reading longer books actually helps kids navigate better online? 🌐📚

A recent CBS News segment highlighted data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development showing a dip in global literacy skills. However, Andreas Schleicher, the Director of Education and Skills at OECD, shared two incredibly powerful takeaways for families:

⭐️ Read Together: Reading aloud to your children is the single best thing you can do for their overall development.

⭐️ Go for 100+ Pages: Reading longer books (over 100 pages) is directly linked to higher digital literacy. It trains the brain to think critically and helps kids separate fact from fiction online.

Building future readers, one class at a time 📚✨

At KHS, Mrs. Vornhagen’s Human Growth & Development students spent several days in the library with Mrs. Green exploring the power of reading to children. They heard from librarians from across the district, played a children’s book game, revisited their favorite childhood books, and learned about the importance of early literacy as reading rates continue to decline nationwide.

After that, they brought it all together by practicing read-aloud strategies like asking interactive questions, incorporating counting, using rhythm, and varying speed and expression to make stories engaging and memorable. They will put their skills to the test by reading to local preschool students next week! Every great reader starts with someone who reads to them! 📖 ❤️
