I have posted before about how important it is to have your educational models. Find peeps on your team, in your building, your district, and "The Real Experts" in the education field, that you follow and grow from. My whole career was based on continued learning and research, while working through that learning with the friends beside me. One of "The Real Experts" I followed and learned from was Ellin Oliver Keene. I was so fortunate to actually meet her, get to know her, and now she is such a good friend. One of my greatest memories with Ellin.. I was holding a summer book club over her book, The Literacy Studio. We had a few questions so I emailed her. Her first thought was, "I would love to join your book club!" She zoomed with us and answered all of our questions first hand. It was so awesome. If your school or district ever has the opportunity to work with her, please do it! She is the best! She is gearing up for next year PD. The following is a letter from her and her contact information.

I’m writing to you because I have had the pleasure of working with your school or district and I value your perspective so much. As I plan my work this summer and in the coming school year, I’ve been thinking a great deal about educators’ needs which leads me to a quick request. If you’re willing to take about 5 minutes to complete this survey it will help me tailor professional learning to align with what educators around the country most need. Please accept my thanks in advance.

With my current clients, I have been focusing on how to improve students’ vocabulary, comprehension, engagement, and assessment in the context of current curricular resources and state requirements. One of my key concerns is that we aren’t differentiating for students particularly in the wake of district- and state-wide resource adoptions. The good news is that it can be done and we’ve begun to see significant improvements in literacy assessments in these schools and districts!

At the same time, I’ve noticed that comprehension instruction and differentiation appear to be on the back burner with most literacy instruction focusing on word learning. This is why your insights on the survey are so important. After studying the results, I’ll go to work planning on-site (in schools and classrooms!) and online professional learning.

# 1 Know Your Purpose- Keep grounded in that purpose and don't lose that purpose in all the "Have To's."

# 2 Have Your Experts- Use strategies in your classroom that have been researched, studied, and authenticated.

# 3 Have Your Peeps- Teaching is hard... but when you try new researched based strategies with your friends it is...
* A lot of fun.
* You have someone to share the success and
challenges with.
* You have friends to problem solve and make
minor tweaks and adjustments.
* You're not doing this thing called "Teaching"
*** ALONE***
