This month's Staff Wellbeing Newsletter focused on relationships. The ones we have with others as well as the ones we have with ourselves. One way to deepen our relationship with ourselves is by learning our attachment style.
Attachment theory has gotten pretty popular lately. Enough so that many of us already identify with a particular attachment style. But do we actually know what that style means, where it comes from, or how it shows up in our everyday lives? If not, it might be time for a deep dive!
Attachment theory says that our earliest experiences with caregivers shape how we connect with others later on. The consistency (or inconsistency) of love and support we receive as children can influence how we show up as partners in adulthood; how we trust, communicate, and feel safe in healthy relationships, including the relationships we have with co-workers, bosses and even students. Understanding our own attachment patterns can be a really helpful tool for improving how we relate to the people we care about.
Curious where you might land on the attachment spectrum? Try this quiz from Psychology Today and use what you learn as a starting point for reflection or support.
Relationship Attachment Test A securely attached person finds it easy to trust others and is willing to depend on them. But someone who is insecurely attached may spend too much time worrying that a partner will abandon them, and have a hard time in the relationship. Take this test to see how securely attached you are.
