She’s always the last one to sit down at the dinner table.

A mother never gets to eat first, she’s always last to get to her plate. Some nights, she even eats a cold meal.

My nana was this way (and with nine children it’s understandable) and my mother was this way.

And now, I get why.

Because there’s a toddler who needs their food dished up first so that it cools down enough for him to eat.

There’s a baby who needs everything mashed up and cut fine so that she doesn’t choke.

A toddler who would like some apple juice and a baby who needs a bib.

A husband who forgot to grab the condiments for you, so you’ll grab them because, well, you’re already up.

A toddler who says his mac and cheese is still too hot so you take the plate away to fix it to his requests.

And then you finally get to sit down…

But, oh yeah, you forgot a glass of water for yourself and a spoon for yourself.

THEN you get to sit down at the table again.

But even then, you’re handing out napkins to everyone at the table.

Because that’s what we do as moms; we make sure everyone else’s needs are met before our own. We’re the caretakers and nurturers of the family. We take care of our husbands and our children first and put ourselves second.

So now I get why she was always the last to the table…she was busy taking care of me.

I’m not graceful at letting go.

Letting go of kids as they grow is one of the hardest things I’ve done. A couple years ago, just hours after my oldest flew back home to NYC and my third oldest was days from shipping out for the Space Force, I started to wonder, “Is this what parenting is? Loving them so much and then letting them leave and me sitting in my home with a part of my heart all over the country?”

It made me teary.
It didn’t even feel fair in that moment.
(How silly is that?)

Honestly, it made me miss the days when they were young and I felt like I had forever. It made me think about when I’d wonder what they’d be like as adults. It made me realize all the truths about time so many told me.

I think that’s why I cry.

It’s not as if the love for my kids goes away now that they’re adults. It’s still there. It’s just that the time - the time in the home together now - is short. Punctuated. Visits.

But my goodness, it’s priceless.

And it’s what I want.

I raised them to fly. I raised them to let go of them. I raised them to be fiercely independent. I raised them to feel.

So when they see their mom cry - they know - she loves us.

She loves us fiercely.

Letting go is so so so hard.

In order for them to soar, it means my grip has to undo.

It’s bittersweet and joy and happy and sadness and pride and memories all mixed together.

I have begun to realize that the days being long is the greatest gift. We struggle through those days. We get pushed to our limits. We wonder, “Will I make it?” And then there comes a day when we get to the other side and those long, hard days became short.

But because they were long - we remember.

It’s what makes us love.
