Have you remembered to put August 4 on your calendar and reminded friends and family? Some people might “hope” you “forget”. DON’T!
Let’s talk a bit more about Amendment 5️⃣ 👇
📚 Amendment 5 isn’t just a tax question — for Missouri’s public schools, it’s a funding cliff. 🧗🏻♀️📉
Missouri’s income tax is one of the state’s largest sources of general revenue.
Amendment 5 phases it out over five years and replaces it with expanded sales taxes —
BUT…
there’s no required plan for exactly how, or whether education funding keeps pace.
Here’s what we are already seeing in Missouri:
• State funding for public schools came up $138 million short this fiscal year alone, even before Amendment 5.
• The Missouri Budget Project estimates the amendment could cut school budgets by as much as 18%.
• The amendment protects local school funding IF local sales tax revenue increases — but there’s no guarantee
A coalition called Parents for Missouri Public Schools — a nonpartisan group of parents, not a political operation — has been holding trainings across the state and pushing school boards to formally flag these risks.
NKC Schools has been sending its own “In the Know” updates to families explaining how the district is funded and what’s at stake with the state budget and this amendment.
I agree with this comment from one local concerned mom:
👉 This is about kids getting what they need, whether they’re in a rural district or a growing suburb — and that shouldn’t depend on a tax experiment with no backup plan.
A NO vote for Amendment 5 will help protect funding for Missouri’s public schools.
