Bench press basics… still working towards proper form and full body awareness throughout the movement (i.e. which muscles are activated for stabilizing versus muscles activated for movement).

Slow and controlled is the name of the game.

Slow tempo and isometric holds during movements allow for greater awareness of joint stability and prime movers (muscles). It also allows for awareness of compensatory strategies (muscles that compensate when the prime mover(s) become fatigue or under active).

These are always fun to implement into routines but also observing the brain “figure it out”!

A little coach-athlete work. It’s important for me to continue to train so I can provide a visual representation of movement form (whether incorrect or proper form) for my clients.

I’m not asking anything of you that I am not able to perform personally. Visual demonstrations can go a long way for the right learner.

During this session, we revisited deadlift form. We’re still toggling between the cognitive and associative phases of motor learning, where this athlete is still requiring increased external cues while simultaneously desiring to rely less on coaching cues and more on intrinsic learning.

We will continue to refine the lift and add variations (range of motion, lift tempo, isometrics at various points in the lift) to the lift in order to increase learning of the movement.

It’s always the WHY for me. Successful instruction comes through knowledge, demonstration, and explanation (The Why does this matter factor).

Education provides a level of empowerment because you’ve given insight into an area that was previously unknown, so when your client is working independently, you’ve given them the awareness to be efficient, effective, safe, and confident.

I’m CONSTANTLY perfecting my mechanics (my craft) because I require nothing else from my clients.

If my clients think I’m hard on them…just know that I’m harder on myself.

Mechanics matter..ESPECIALLY when fatigue sets in. Most individuals are unaware of what muscle fatigue feels like, so they “push through” compromising mechanics, yielding to increased likelihood of injury.
