HOT TAKE: The running gurus are wrong. They say you can’t run a faster marathon without logging 50-60-70 mile weeks. Truth is that the best way to actually get faster is to run LESS, not MORE.

This picture captures the sheer joy you feel when you cross the finish line of the Boston Marathon. It's incredible.
Ask any runner. It's why they’ll tell you that Boston is the ultimate bucket list marathon.
And why not? It's a classic. Run each year on Patriots Day, it’s a picturesque, point-to-point race, that goes from semi-rural Hopkinton to Copley Square in downtown Boston.
Half a million specators line the streets, to cheer on the 30,000 runners racing that day.
But what makes Boston truly different is exclusivity. Boston is by INVITATION ONLY. To run it, you have to BQ (Boston Qualify).
That means running another marathon faster than the qualifying standard for your age group.
And those qualifying standards are hard. REALLY HARD.
In 2019, only 1 out of 10 marathon times was fast enough to BQ. That means 90% of marathon finishers didn’t make the cut. So most runners don’t believe they’ll ever get to Boston. And rightly so.
I was certainly in that boat…
See, I’ve always been a spectacularly mediocre athlete. Average height. Average weight. Average athletic ability. My first two marathons were utterly average. I finished around the 50th percentile of my age group in both. Honestly, I had no business even thinking about Boston.
But since then, I’ve managed to get faster and BQ 3 times. That might sound like I’m bragging. But really what I’m saying is that if I can do it, you can too.
I didn’t BQ by following a training plan from one of the running gurus. I developed my own unconventional plan, a plan that I believe works specifically for average athletes.
It's called the Ultimate BQ Guide. And if you put in the work, it will make you FASTER, while running LESS miles, not MORE.

Cycling is great cross training for runners. And today It was 77 degrees at 5:30 am, with a dew point of 71. So no run for me, but had a fantastic ride with the crew. Still soupy out there, but more breeze on the bike!

Sometimes life throws you a curveball. If you’re expecting a fastball, you have to make an adjustment, or you whiff!
This morning, I woke up to a thunderstorm that cancelled my planned group bike ride. At first, I was annoyed, by then the rain stopped leaving a nice cool morning in its wake. So I went out for an easy run. The cooler temperature and light breeze made it about as enjoyable as I’ve had in awhile! It was a good adjustment...
COVID-19 has been a major curveball for all of us, in many, many ways. What adjustments are you making?
