When remembering Grandma Dee on her death day and researching for upcoming Grief 101 presentation intersect.
As someone who grew up listening to her grandpa’s stories about driving a tank during WWII and also having a Jewish educator in grade school who shared familial stories and memories of that same time, Holocaust Remembrance Day has never been just one day of the year.
Their stories and the stories between the covers of these books have helped shape me into who I am today.
“And they are beginning to realize that the world they live in is a place where the right thing is often hard, sometimes dangerous, and frequently unpopular.” - Lois Lowry, Number the Stars
“Where there’s hope, there’s life. It fills us with fresh courage and makes us strong again.” - Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl
“To die, it’s easy … but you have to struggle for life! Until the last moment we must struggle together! I need you! And you’ll see that together we’ll survive.” - Art Spiegelman, Maus
“I want to say that it disturbs me deeply that I was part of such a criminal organization. I am ashamed that I saw injustice was being done and I did nothing to stop it. I apologize for my actions. I am very, very sorry.” - Patricia Posner, The Pharmacist of Auschwitz
“Doing nothing is as good as collaborating.” - Anthony Doerr, All the Light We Cannot See
“If I have learned anything in this long life of mine, it is this: in love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are.” - Kristin Hannah, The Nightingale
“She took a step and didn’t want to take any more, but she did.” - Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

Came across this book while thrifting. May 2026 be a good year, even in grief.
